Marion was born on May 31,1931 in Lashburn, SK, a second daughter for Ann and Orville Stone. She had one sister, Eileen.
Her father was a banker and manager with the Canadian Bank of Commerce and during her early life moved to many locations across Saskatchewan (Paynton, Buchanan,
Rouleau, Turtleford, Canora, Saskatoon and Humboldt) with her mother Ann, sister, Eileen, and many cats. Marion had a full and faith-filled childhood. Although there was not always a Catholic church nearby to attend, her mother ensured that the girls (along with the neighborhood children) were educated in their Catechism. Marion and Eileen both received the Sacraments of Baptism, First Communion, First Reconciliation and Confirmation. Marion took piano lessons, learned to curl and enjoyed summer vacations swimming and fishing at nearby lakes with her father.
Entertainment included reading, kite flying, and listening to the radio, as there was no television.
Marion graduated from high school in Canora in 1949. There were 13 students in the class! Her wish to become a nurse was fulfilled when she graduated from Saint Paul’s School of Nursing in Saskatoon in 1952, receiving the Paediatric Award. She worked at Melfort Union Hospital, then Sick Children’s Hospital in Toronto. Later, she was
employed with Trans Canada Airlines as a stewardess when only registered nurses were hired. She continued with her nursing career part-time at Saint Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg. Her vocation as a mother, however, was her longest and most committed career.
Marion and Garry were married on July 30, 1958. They settled in Yorkton opening Fletcher’s Drug Store (1954-1998). Together they raised four children (Catherine,
Maureen, Patricia, Bradley).
Through the years, Marion was actively involved in many Yorkton clubs and organizations: Yorkton Ladies’ Curling Club, Deer Park Ladies’ Golf Club (Past President), Yorkton Bridge Clubs, Kinette and K-ette Clubs (Past President), Girl Guides’ Association (Badge Secretary), Yorkton Catholic School System (Advisory Board), Christ the Teacher Catholic School Board (Trustee 1988-2003), St. Gerard’s Parish (Council/Hospitality Ministry/Music Ministry, Catholic Women’s League) and Secretary at many of the annual Yorkton Music Festivals. Marion received recognition and lifetime memberships with the Kinette and K-ette Clubs, the Deer Park Ladies’ Golf Club as well as recognition in the CWL: Maple Leaf Award (2012) and 55 year pin (2019). She was a great historian for many of these organizations creating scrapbooks and photo albums for the club archives.
Marion was known as a “woman of service”; respected in the Yorkton community for her intellect, generous spirit, kind heart and her gift of card giving and letter writing.
A funeral mass celebrating Marion’s life will be held at St. Gerard’s Parish on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. Following mass, lunch will be served in the parish hall. Interment will take place at 3:00 p.m. in the Garden of St. Luke, Yorkton Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to: Saint Gerard’s Parish, Food Bank, STARS, Canadian Mental Health Association or the SPCA as gifts of remembrance.
