Several decades ago, waterfowl hunters recognized the necessity of preserving wetland habitats to ensure the continuation of various species. As a result, Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) was established in 1938. Their efforts to restore and manage natural resources have continued successfully with support from conservationists like Lorne Scott. Earlier this week, DUC presented Scott with the Saskatchewan Volunteer of the Year Award for 2023.
Scott, who farms near Indian Head, has volunteered with DUC in various capacities since 1966. This was a natural extension of the other conservation efforts he has engaged in throughout his life. Those efforts have included working with many organizations like the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation and Nature Saskatchewan, as well as serving a four-year term as Saskatchewan’s Minister of Environment.
In 1981, Scott became involved with the DUC banquet fundraising program. He is now chairman of the banquet committee for Indian Head, which hosts an event each spring. In addition to the local banquet, Scott regularly supports DUC fundraising efforts across the province.
“He goes above and beyond for Ducks Unlimited, attending and volunteering at events,” said Travis Behning, Manager of Volunteer and Corporate Fundraising. “He can be seen at half a dozen events across Saskatchewan each year.”
Funds raised at the banquets are used for habitat protection and conservation within the province. Over 200 people attended last year’s banquet at Memorial Hall in Indian Head and Scott anticipates another sold out crowd for the upcoming banquet on April 19.
