Albert Miller of Melville, SK, and formerly of Neudorf, SK, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2024, at the age of 94 years.
Albert Raymond was born March 23, 1929, at Neudorf, to Jacob and Christina (nee Litzenberger) Miller. In his teenage years, Albert was drawn to the CPR at Neudorf, where he spent countless hours helping, first for free, then employed by the trainmen. Albert got to know
everything about the railway, so well that he was able to turn the engines around on the turntable. When he was 16, Albert started working for Canada Post. One of his first jobs was sorting mail on a moving train in Alberta. He then started working in different offices, as postmaster in Humbolt, then Melfort, followed by two years in Ottawa. He finally returned to Melville, where he served as postmaster until his retirement in 1983.
In June of 1980, Albert married June McGregor, and they had a great life, enjoying 31 years together. The couple enjoyed travelling and went on many trips with friends.
Albert loved the railroad all of his life; he would drive to the Melville train station and watch the different trains coming and going. He was a bird lover and was very knowledgeable about the birds of Saskatchewan. Albert was a source of knowledge for all whom he knew.
Albert’s favourite charities were his church and Operation Smile, an organization that provides corrective surgery for children in Africa who were born with cleft palates and lips. He felt that no child should have to endure a life like that.
Following June’s passing, Albert lived at Legion Manor for 12 years, always able to remain independent. In 2023, he moved to St. Paul Lutheran Home, where the staff considered him to be quite the gentleman.
In his last years, Albert enjoyed having coffee at Tim Hortons, where he loved his large double-double and enjoyed the fellowship with family and friends.
Albert was predeceased by his parents; his wife, June; and his three brothers, Norman, Harold and Lawrence. He is survived by nieces, nephews and many friends.
Albert ran the good race; may God bless him on his journey.
Albert’s funeral service will be held Saturday, Feb. 17, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Melville. Interment will take place in Christ Lutheran Cemetery, Neudorf.
Arrangements are entrusted to Matthews Funeral Home, Melville.
