Georgina Ester May Sies (Young) of Melville, SK, passed away peacefully with family by her side on Monday, Sept. 25, 2023, at the age of 86 years.
Georgina was born to William and Coreen Young on Oct. 16, 1936, on a farm near Minton, Sask. During her childhood, her family lived on various farms in southern Saskatchewan before moving to the Melville area in 1949.
As a young woman, Georgina worked at The Beanery restaurant in the Melville CN Station. She also worked as a teacher’s assistant at
Reimer School where she met Mervin Sies in February 1956. After a brief courtship, they were married on Aug. 24, 1956, at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Melville. Together they built a family and the family farm.
Georgina worked with Mervin in the fields and barns, while managing the household and maintaining a large garden. She was also active in her church and served on the Ladies Aid Auxiliary. Using hand embroidery skills passed downfrom her mother, she created gifts for her family.
Georgina and Mervin moved from the family farm into Melville in 1990. She remained in that home until October 2021 when she chose to move to Helping Hands. Due to failing health, she moved to St. Paul Lutheran Home in 2022. During her stay at the home, her sense of humour endeared her to the staff.
Georgina was predeceased by her husband, Mervin; her parents, William and Coreen (nee Deering); her sisters and their husbands, Gertrude (Norman Hausch), Margaret (Donald Sedgwick) and Jaqueline (Levi Walden); her brothers and their wives, James Young and William Young (Dot).
She leaves to cherish her memory: her children, Kathy (Hugh) Zerr, Sharon (Brian) Piller, Stuart (Kathleen) Sies and Betty (Todd) Armbruster; eleven grandchildren, Diane Zerr, Paul (Lisa) Zerr, Kristopher (Meghan) Schmidt, Rebecca Flaman, Sarah Schmidt (Adam Bunz), Jordan (Jacklyn) Sies, Nolan (Raeanne) Sies, Brianna (Kyle) Ward, Bettina Sies (Riley Sittler), Jillian Armbruster (Landon Ulmer) and Ryan (Breanne) Armbruster; nineteen great-grandchildren, Rielle and Mac Gibbons, Ava and Owen Schmidt, Leila and Deacon Flaman, Bridgette Bunz, Jayla, Scottie and Ally Sies, Benson and Ryker Sies, Nyah, Mila, Leda and Koah Ward, Blake and Perri Ulmer, and Charlie Armbruster; sisters-in-law Marion Harper (Glen Buettner) and Elaine Sies; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Georgina’s funeral service was held Thursday, Oct. 5, 2023, at Matthews Funeral Home, Melville, with the Rev. Dawn Myrfield officiating. Scriptures were read by Kristopher Schmidt and Nolan Sies, and tributes were presented by Sharon Piller and Bettina Sies. Organist Gaylene Matthews led in the hymns, “In the Garden”, “Here I Am, Lord” and “Amazing Grace”. A special song, which was a loving collaboration by all the grandkids and rewritten by Becky Flaman, was sung by Sarah Schmidt. Interment took place in the Melville City Cemetery with Diane Zerr, Rebecca Flaman, Sarah Schmidt, Brianna Ward, Bettina Sies and Jillian Armbruster acting as pallbearers.
Arrangements were entrusted to Matthews Funeral Home, Melville.
