Edith (Edie) Fonagy of Kipling, Sask., passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2023 at the Kipling Care Home at the age of 87.
Edie was born on Jan. 1, 1936 to William Szakacs Sr. and Emma Szakacs in Bekevar, Sask. She was the third youngest of eight children (William Jr., Fred, Margaret, Elsie, Adele, Doris and Arthur). Edie married the love of her life, Joseph Fonagy on Oct. 21, 1955 at Bekevar Church. She gave birth to her daughter, Roxanne on July 19, 1957. Ten years later they welcomed their son, Trevor on April 18, 1967.
Edie worked as a nursing aid at Kipling Hospital for over 40 years (1960 – 2001). She was well known for her compassionate care, comforting back rubs and infectious laugh. She spent her retirement years travelling with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and spending time with friends and family.
Edie was predeceased by her loving husband Joe; her daughter Roxanne; and siblings, William, Fred, Margaret and Elsie. Edie will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by her son, Trevor Fonagy; grandchildren, Kristin Mountain (Kyran Mountain) and Stephanie Baker (Holden Baker); great-grandchildren, Grayson and Abigail Mountain; son-in-law Bruce Parsons; siblings, Adele Daku, Doris Barta and Arthur Szakacs; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and long-time friends.
There will be a private graveside service at a later date. The family would like to thank all the staff at the Kipling Care Home who provided excellent care to her in her final days. In honour of Edie and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bekevar Heritage Foundation Inc. (Box 502 Kipling Sask. S0G 2S0). To the nurses, CCAs and kitchen staff, thank you for the care and support Edie Fonagy and our family received from all of you these past few weeks. Words cannot express how appreciative we are. Your acts of kindness – large and small – gave us great comfort in her final days.
