It is with profound sadness, but also rejoicing, that we announce the passing of Edythe Cowan from her earthly home to her heavenly home. Edythe passed away peacefully at the Long Term Care in Oyen, AB on Friday, Oct. 15 at the age of 97 years.
Edythe was born June 13,1924 on the farm near Spy Hill, Sask. She was the fourth daughter of Roy and Eva (Salkeld) Crosson. She had three older sisters and two younger brothers. Her family life was filled with love. On Jan. 20 , 1945, Edythe married Hugh Herbertson Cowan and they enjoyed 37 wonderful years together. They were blessed with two children, Wilson and Shirley. They resided on the farm near Langbank, Sask. They grew grain and raised cattle, horses, sheep and exotic chickens. Edythe spent hours every week trimming her grass and tending to her gardens.
After Hugh’s death, Edythe developed a friendship with John Ingjaldson. She enjoyed his companionship for 26 years.
Edythe took her schooling in Spy Hill and after graduation attended universities in Regina and later in Saskatoon to complete her teacher’s training. Her career included Montgomery, Baring and Langbank School Districts where lasting friendships were made. She also taught music lessons for a number of years. Edythe enjoyed her many decades of teaching.
Edythe traveled. She traveled frequently to stay in touch with her grandchildren. She tented from the West Coast to the East Coast of Canada. Other highlights included trips to Florida, Hawaii, Puerta Vallarta, Alaska, and up to Tuktoyaktuk, NWT.
Edythe loved and lived life to the fullest, often the last to leave an event. She enjoyed family, friends and church. People were always her number one focus. Socializing included rodeos, fairs, card games, board games, dancing, sporting events, weddings, grads, funerals, senior clubs, Rebekah Lodge, Kennedy Friendship Centre, time spent at Kenosee Lake, her UCW meetings (Clowning with a Purpose), or a simple chat over tea.
Early in life Edythe realized she needed God. No matter the weather, she and her dad would drive the minister to church activities by horse and buggy or sleigh. She developed a rich heritage of love, hope and faith in God. Edythe clung to God as her rock no matter the challenges she encountered. Her church life included the Golden Plain, Langbank, Kennedy, and Oyen United Churches and in her later years the Oyen Ministerial Church services at Long Term Care.
In 2008, Edythe started her winter vacations in Oyen,AB. She would house sit during the winter months. Then in 2017, Oyen became her permanent home. She always said she would retire at a place with good water, church and a choir. She joined the Oyen Senior’s Lodge Choir, where she was able to continue her love of music and singing.
Edythe will be lovingly remembered by son, Wilson (Judy) Cowan; daughter, Shirley (Keith) Foot; sister-in-law, Delia Crosson; brother, Francis Crosson; grandchildren, Scott (Marie) Cowan, Marie(Dave) Bose, Sheila (Paul) Kwasnicki, Wayne (Maggi)Cowan, Graham (Leah) Foot, Jocelyn (Jeremiah) Doyle, Sarah (Tannin) Schmidt; great -grandchildren, MacKenzie, Marissa, Colton, Charlotte, Isabelle, Nathaniel, Clairabelle, Madaline, Lydia, Vincent, Genevieve, Grayson,Garnette, Lincoln, Edison, Veronika, Judah, Vivienne, Kingston; along with her numerous relatives and friends.
Edythe was predeceased by her parents, Roy and Eva Crosson; husband Hugh; friend John; family: Mabel/Jack Flett, Mary/Donald Rutherford, Edward Harbo, Jean/Wellwood Cowan,Wilson Crosson, Audrey Crosson, Inez Crosson, John/Janet Cowan, Jean/Edgar Taylor, Molly/Murrary Cowan, Bruce Cowan, Lyie Crosson, Klenberg Clark, Ena Flett, and Ron Flett.
The family would like to express their appreciation for the support and comfort each one of you have given.
A celebration of Edythe’s life was held Nov. 6 at Oyen Evangelical Missionary Church, and interment took place Nov. 9 at the cemetery at Spy Hill, Sask.
