It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Mel Morhart of Melville, SK. He passed away on Monday,
Aug. 23, 2021, at the age of 84 years.
Mel was born to Sigmund and Annie (nee Hickie) Morhart on July 23, 1937, and grew up on the family farm near Killaly, SK.
He was predeceased by his mother, Annie; his father, Sigmund; sister and brother-in-law Bernice and Bill Hudy; brother James Morhart; a brother-in-law, Robert Tucker; and his wife, Tilly Morhart. He leaves behind: sons Murray (Shannon) and Barry (Naomi); five grandchildren, Matt, Brandon, Aurora, Magnus and Thor. He is also survived by his sister Diane Schmidt (Richard) and sister Jackie Tucker.
In the early years, Mel worked in autobody at Walter’s Garage in Melville. He farmed close by Melville for a number of years, later working as a grain buyer at the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool until his retirement. Following retirement, he worked at Saskatchewan Crop Insurance for a while. Mel enjoyed farming, snowmobiling, lake life, fishing, gardening and, in younger days, playing ball with the Melville Comets.
A vigil service was held Sunday, Aug. 29, 2021, at Matthews Funeral Home, Melville, with the Rev. Fr. Andrew Sowa, OMI presiding. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday, Aug. 30, 2021, at St. Henry’s Roman Catholic Church, Melville, with Fr. Sowa celebrating, assisted by Deacon Dave Hudy. The organist was Yvette Beutel, Florence Parlee was the reader, and Sharon Duczek led the intercessory prayers. Interment took place in St. Henry’s Parish Cemetery with Matt Morhart, Jeff Morhart, Rudy Duczek, Garth Hack, Maurice Taillon and Bruce Parlee acting as pallbearers.
Arrangements were entrusted to Matthews Funeral Home, Melville.
