Clara Schaar of Morris Lodge in Bangor, Sask., and formerly of Melville, Sask., wife of the late Paul Schaar, entered her eternal rest on Monday, June 25, 2018 at St. Peter’s Hospital in Melville at the age of 102 years.
Clara was born on Jan. 16, 1916 at Reward, Sask., a daughter to George and Barbara (nee Feist) Schell.
Clara grew up on the family farm and attended Amaranth School. She worked at various jobs, and helped her parents on the family farm.
She moved to Melville in 1946 to work at St. Peter’s Hospital. While there, she met Paul Schaar at a skating club. In 1947, she was united in marriage to Paul and remained in Melville.
She enjoyed growing flowers, gardening, knitting, sewing, making different crafts, watching hockey and visiting. Paul passed away in 1989 and Clara continued to live in their home until 2015, and then moved to Morris Lodge in Bangor where she resided.
When Clara was 93 years old, she wrote down some of her memories while she was growing up: milking cows, feeding the calves and pigs, gathering eggs, washing clothes for 11 people, cooking, making nine loaves of bread every second day, planting a garden, hoeing and weeding, canning fruit, vegetables and chicken. They had an ice house in the winter to freeze beef, making country-style sausage and liver sausage, as well headcheese. When the slough by the barn froze, there were six of them who would have to share one pair of skates, going to school with the buggy in summer and the sleigh in winter. Clara also remembered working for a family with an elderly grandma and was paid $5 a month.
Predeceased by her parents; her husband, Paul; siblings, George (Liz), Wendlin, Godfred (Theresa), Margaret (John) Elder, Joseph, Alexander, Elizabeth (Betty) (Gene) Gerard and Katie Smith.
Clara leaves to cherish her memory: her brother-in-law, Jim Smith; and sisters-in-law, Lil Schell and Jean Schell; as well as nieces, nephews and friends.
The funeral mass was celebrated on Tuesday, July 3, 2018 from St. Henry’s Roman Catholic Church in Melville with Father Albert Schmitz as the celebrant.
