Susan Hooper, aged 98 years, seven months, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Feb. 3, 2019 at St. Paul Lutheran Home in Melville, Sask.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2019 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Bailey’s Funeral Home, Melville.
Susan was born in Leduc, Alta. to the late Charles and Isabella McColman. She grew up in Edmonton and graduated from high school there. A natural athlete, Susan played many sports and was honored to be chosen as captain of the broomball team.
At the age of 17, Susan met her soulmate and fellow athlete, Ronald Hooper. Ron and Suemarried in Edmonton on Oct. 4, 1941. They became devoted parents to three daughters.
Susan was a CGIT (Canadian Girls in Training) leader and a long-term member of the Alberta Highland Dancing Association in charge of publicity and the monthly newsletter. Throughout most of her adult life, Susan was extremely active in Beta Sigma Phi and later in the Kelowna Women’s Institute. She received many accolades for her talent in organizing charitable, social and cultural activities.
In 1976, Ron and Sue built their dream home on Kalamalka Lake in Lake Country, British Columbia. They later moved to a condo in Holiday Park on Duck Lake. After Ron passed away in 2007, Susan moved to Sandalwood, a retirement residence in Kelowna, B. C . In 2014, Susan moved to Aspen Bluffs Villa in Yorkton, Sask. to be close to her youngest daughter and loving caregiver, Kerry.
Susan is survived by her three daughters: Sharron Jordan, Waite Park, Minn.; Terrie Sue (Peter) Kember, Orleans, Ont. and Kerry Bartake, Crooked Lake, Sask. Surviving grandchildren include: Susan, Elizabeth and Jean; Darcia and Jeffrey; Shara, Peter, Kendra and Ronald. Surviving great- grandchildren are: Emily, Jon, Kate and Abby; Jack; Ariya, Catherin, Kadence, Cecilia, Darius, Dante, Miakoda, Dorion, Riane and Alessandra Sue. Susan is also survived by other relatives across Canada and the United States.
Susan was predeceased by her sons-in-law, Brian Bartake and William Jordan, and also by three great-grandchildren, Keira Susan, Ashlyn Mikaela and John Kevin.
Arrangements are by Bailey’s Funeral and Cremation Care, Melville.
