Date of Birth: December 18, 1920

Date of Death: November 13, 2018

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Kathleen (Kay) Gladys Schettler (nee McVean). Our beloved mother and grandmother peacefully departed this life on Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2018 at the Wolseley Memorial Integrated Health Centre (Lakeside Home).
Kay was born in Swift Current, Sask. on Dec. 18, 1920, and raised in Sceptre, Sask. In her youth she enjoyed playing softball and dancing, especially to Big Band music.
She moved to Broadview, Sask. in the early 1940s, working at Clerkson’s (Wylie’s) store until shortly after her marriage to Gordon Schettler on Christmas Day, 1942. After the war, Gordon and Kay settled in Broadview where they raised their family.
Kay was active in the community. For over 50 years she was a member of the United Church and the United Church Women (UCW). At age 85, Kay volunteered to play the organ at church services. She served in various administrative roles for the UCW, including secretary and treasurer. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Throughout the summer, Kay golfed regularly — always wanting to avoid garter snakes. She participated in many local golf tournaments, winning several trophies. Her favourite activity was bowling. She was captain of her team for 45 years, during which time she was the official scorekeeper. Kay played in both the ladies’ and mixed leagues, earning dozens of trophies for herself and her various teams. Kay’s community activities occupied her time until her health began to decline in 2009.
Kay is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Penny (Ken) Lazell, grandchildren, Sean, Kim and Shannon; her sons, Jim (Tracey) and Don (Jean); brother, Bruce (Iris); sister, Elaine Goodridge; brother-in-law, Bryan Bjarnason; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Kay was predeceased by her husband, Gordon; her parents, Gladys and Nicol McVean; brother, Don (Pat); sister, Evelyn Bjarnason; and numerous aunts and uncles.
We extend our deepest gratitude to the staff at the Broadview House and Lakeside Home who spent many years caring for Kay. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
A celebration of Kay’s life will be held in the spring of 2019. Arrangements in care of Greg Kulak – Tubman Funeral Homes (1.800.667.8962) www.tubmanfh.com
