APPELL – Adolf, known to everyone who knew him as “Luke,” was born on July 22, 1922 in the Grayson district of Saskatchewan, a son to Wenzel and Rosalia (nee Ruhr) Appell. He received his education at Hauer, Gelowitz and Grayson High School and helped his par =ents on the family farm.
Luke left Grayson and moved to Ontario and worked at a fitting factory for two years, then returned to Grayson. Luke and his sister, Evelyn, and her husband, Steve, purchased Ruhr’s Garage, which they operated for two years.
On June 17, 1947, Luke was united in marriage to Alvina Gelowitz at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Grayson. They were blessed with six children. The couple resided in Grayson until October, then moved to a farm west of Grayson and started farming and later a trucking service hauling livestock and grain.
In 1971, Luke started a scrap iron business as well as continuing to farm. On Nov. 11, 2005 the couple moved to Melville, but Luke would drive to the farm everyday and continued to farm and buy iron until failing health forced him to retire.
Luke was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was treasurer for 18 years with that group, Grayson Senior Club, Sask. Wheat Pool and the United Grain Growers, as well a director of the Credit Union for 15 years. His interests were antiques, playing ball and hockey in his younger years, and spending time with his family. His faith was very important to him.
