MASUR – Mr. Gus Masur, husband of Olga Masur of Yorkton, Sask., formerly of the Melville district, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2016 at Yorkton. He was 92 years of age.
Gustave John Masur, son of John and Annie Masur, was born in the Melville district on March 29, 1923. He attended school at Pulaski Plains near Melville, Sask.
Gus enlisted in the army and served during the Second World War. After the war, Gus farmed for most of his life, first working on the family farm and then taking over the land from his parents, keeping the farm in the family.
In 1946, he married Olga Yuskow, daughter of John and Annie Yuskow, who then joined him on the farm.
Gus was a hard working man and worked from sunrise to sunset while farming and enjoyed the time he spent tending to the many animals and working the land. He shared his knowledge and love of the land with his three sons and daughter. He instilled in them the values of hard work, lending a helping hand, and respect for others.
Gus loved his family above all else. He was a humble and gentle man and would not hesitate to help his family, friends, and neighbours whenever needed. He had a wry sense of humour; when asked how he was feeling, his typical reply was, “with my hands.” One of his other favourite sayings was, “It’s a great life if it don’t weaken.”
In later years, in addition to the work on the farm, he worked at the provincial building in Melville for which he took a course and received his boiler certification.
Gus and Olga eventually sold their farm and moved to an acreage that had been part of the original farm where they were now semi-retired, as they still did janitorial duties for the drug stores in Melville.
For many years, Gus and Olga worked very hard together, maintaining the many large gardens from which they took the produce to farmer’s market every week.
In 2003, Gus and Olga decided to sell the acreage and move to Yorkton to be closer to family.
After battling cancer and Alzheimer’s the last few years of his life, Gus passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2016.
He leaves to mourn his passing and cherish his memories: his wife, Olga; sons, Don, and Roger; and daughter, Deb; and their children, Verdella, Cindy, Vern, Melony, Linton, Travis, Terren, Jason, Kaitlyn, Chantel, and Clayton; as well as many more relatives and friends.
Gus was predeceased by his parents, John and Annie; brother, Charlie; and his oldest son, Ron.
A family funeral service was held on Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at the Chapel of Bailey’s Funeral Home in Yorkton with Rev. Daniel Moeller of Zion Lutheran Church officiating.
Interment to follow at a later date in the family plot in the Brewer Cemetery.
Arrangements were entrusted to Bailey’s Funeral Home Yorkton-Melville.
