In Loving Memory of
Martha Maria Unterschute
Feb. 5, 1933 – Dec. 19, 2015
Martha Maria Hahn was born in Melville, Sask. on Feb. 5, 1933 to George and Anna (Benjatschek) Hahn and was the youngest of 15 children. She received her education at North Melville School and worked for local families.
On Nov. 6, 1951 she married the love of her life, Herbert Unterschute at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Melville. Family became their priority and they were blessed with five girls, Wendy, Debbie, Lori, Shelley and Candace. Martha loved to lay claim to “five girls” and was proud to tell anyone she met about her daughters.
Providing healthy home- grown food year-round and sewing clothing for the family were two of her many incredible accomplishments. Strong in her faith, she made sure that church was forefront in the family. She took an active role in the church and community and helped out at the Thrift Shop, Meals on Wheels and many church caterings. As a great role model, the girls were also an active part of the church community.
The family moved off the farm and into the bright city lights of Melville in 1956, where their home became a gathering place for friends and relatives. Martha loved to host and welcomed many people into their home, whether for the evening or for an extended stay. She somehow balanced her role as wife, mom, sister, aunt and friend and still found time to work part-time at the Flower Shoppe. She also sold Avon to the neighborhood, friends and relatives and received many sales awards. Yahtzee and fishing were also high on her list of favorite things to do and she could count the dice faster than anyone and often had the biggest catch of the day.
Although Alzheimer’s was slowly chipping away at her memory, she never lost her sense of humour or her love for her family.
She was predeceased by her loving husband, Herbert Unterschute on July 26, 2010; her parents and siblings: Jacob Hahn, Susana and Louis Aeichele, John and Evelyn Hahn, Joseph and Edith Hahn, Daniel Hahn, Karoline (Lena) and Rudolf Speidel, Catherine (Katie) and Albert Reitenbach, Rudolf Hahn, Matilda (Tillie) and Otto Daunheimer, George and Edith Hahn, Anna and Philip and Rudolph Reinson, Eleanora Hahn, Rudolf Hahn, Levina and Jacob Kohlenberg; and several nieces and nephews.
She leaves to mourn: her children, Wendy (Garry) Mihaichuk of Calgary, Alta., Debbie (Fran) Brimacombe of Buena Vista, Sask., Lori (Brian) Thomson of Yorkton, Sask., Shelley (Mike) Bohay of Lloydminster, Alta. and Candace (Hank) Unterschute-Shannon of Kanata, Ont.; grandchildren, Jeffery (Carolyn) Mihaichuk, Tara (Doug) Rebal, Michael (Jennifer) Mihaichuk, Ryan (Erin) Brimacombe, Joel Brimacombe, Sean (Rachel) Brimacombe, Kim Thomson, Jonathan (Ali) Bohay, Jeremy (Tenille) Bohay, Brendan Bohay, Keiran Bohay (Astrid Eckerle), Akiva Shannon and Benjamin Shannon; great-grandchildren, Devin and Genysee Mihaichuk, Jackson and Anderson Rebal, Morgan and Emma Mihaichuk, Sam, Ike and Ellie Brimacombe, Abbey and Alenna Brimacombe, Tyler and Penny Brimacombe, Evelyn Bohay, Piper, Sawyer and Jasper Bohay; sister-in-laws, Elsie (Dan) Hahn and Elsie (Rudy) Hahn; and numerous friends and family.
A memorial service will be held in July 2016 in Melville, Sask. (date to be announced). Donations can be made to The Good Shepherd Lutheran Church or The Alzheimer’s Society of Saskatchewan.
