A school bus carrying a group of children collided with a freight train in Carlyle last week.
The collision happened on the afternoon of Tuesday, March 26 when an eastbound train collided with a southbound school bus at the railway crossing on 4th Street East in Carlyle. The crossing was not equipped with flashing lights or a crossing arm but was marked by a railway crossing sign.
RCMP reported that the train hit the front axle on the passenger side of the school bus and spun it off the train tracks, at which time the train came to a stop. The entire front end of the bus received extensive damage in the collision.
The bus, which had seven youth on it along with the driver, was heading from the elementary school to the high school in Carlyle at the time of the accident.
Fire, ambulance and RCMP attended the scene and discovered only one minor injury as a result of the collision. Carlyle RCMP advise that all seven youth passengers were examined by EMS at the Carlyle Elementary School and then released to family members. The one injured youth suffered a scraped leg when she was knocked off her seat as a result of the collision.
The 67-year-old male bus driver was also examined on scene by EMS and then released.
The train was able to depart the scene later that afternoon and the schools bus was towed from the scene.
Carlyle RCMP are still obtaining statements in regards to the collision and no charges have been laid at this time.
