Sherwin Albert Derby passed away on Thursday, Aug. 27, 2026, at the age of 90 years.
He was the middle child of five, born to Albert and Lillian Derby on Dec. 15, 1935, in Grenfell. He married his forever love, Marilyn, on Oct. 24, 1959.
Sherwin is survived by his wife Marilyn and four children: Jo-anne Derby (Saskatoon); Denise (Rick) Stilling (Saskatoon) – Richard, Lauresa, Nikita and Derick; Brian (Paula) Derby (Estevan) – Kayla, Amber and great-grandson Koean; and Glenda (Tracy) Erickson (Melville) – Jory (Jodi) and Rowan; and brother Roger Derby (Regina).
Sherwin was predeceased by his parents Albert and Lillian: his siblings Carol Popplewell, Howard Derby and Lorraine Schmidt; and brother-in-law William Armbruster.
He was a third-generation farmer and his heart was always on the farm. He was a hardworking mixed farmer
who loved his horses and cattle. As a young boy, he was recruited to play for senior men’s fastball teams. He
enjoyed hunting, fishing and curling and shared his love of hockey through coaching. He remained an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed watching local teams and attending his grandchildren’s activities.
Sherwin was generous with his time and quietly gave back to his community. He volunteered with the Tetlock Telephone District, Pool Elevator, Grenfell Wildlife Federation, Snowplowing Club and many other community groups over the years. He never sought recognition for his contributions; helping and being part of the community was simply who he was.
Sherwin cherished family and friends and he loved connecting at auction sales and over coffee. The twinkle in his eye, teasing nature and unmistakable laugh will be remembered by all who knew him. He was resilient, facing many health and life challenges with a positive attitude and enduring faith. As a father, his lasting legacy will be his love, kindness, integrity, generosity, support and tenacity. Those who knew Sherwin will hold close the many memories of a life well lived and a man who was truly special.
The funeral service will take place in Peace Lutheran Church, Grenfell, SK on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Noel Richards officiating. A private family interment will take place in the Grenfell Cemetery.
