Hilda was born on March 23, 1927, in the small German colony of Annette, Russia (now Ukraine). She and her parents immigrated to Canada in 1929 and settled on a farm near Frobisher, SK. There she was raised with five siblings. Following high school, Hilda attended nursing college in Winnipeg, MB, where she earned her LPN diploma. It was while working at the Neudorf Hospital that she met the love of her life, a teacher, Ed Piller, and they were married in 1952. In 1958, they moved to Melville. They had three children (Terri, Janie and Phil) and seven grandchildren (Jayton, Brianna, Travis, Thomas, Daniel, Taylor and Erin).
Hilda loved the busy job of raising her family, while also enjoying favourite activities such as gardening, reading, crocheting and, of course, baking. Mom loved her sweets!! She was an active member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Eventually, Hilda returned to work part-time as an LPN at St. Paul Lutheran Home, where she enjoyed working for many years until her retirement.
Hilda and Ed’s greatest joys were time spent with family and friends. There were many happy years of camping, fishing and entertaining at their cabin at Crooked Lake, which had eventually become their home. Mom loved cooking meals for everyone who came to visit. They also enjoyed many winter getaways to Arizona.
In 2000, Hilda suffered the sudden loss of her dear husband, Ed. Returning to live in Melville, her life revolved around spending precious time with her family. During these years, she was blessed with five beautiful great-grandchildren (Reese, Belle, Lincoln, Elijah and Hugo).
Mom will be greatly missed and fondly remembered for her selfless, gentle nature, sense of humour and sweet smile that she displayed until her last days.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Pastor Dawn and to the staff at St. Paul Lutheran Home. Their support, compassion and professional care of Hilda was a great source of comfort.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Matthews Funeral Home, Melville.
