Date of Birth: October 3, 1947
Date of Death: March 18, 2025
It is with great sadness that the family of Roger Allen Caughlin announces his sudden passing on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, following extensive surgery.
Roger was the firstborn child of Allen and Jenny Caughlin, on Oct. 3, 1947. He was born in Tisdale, Sask. This is where he attended school, graduating from Grade 12 in 1965. During his time at home, he was expected to do many chores with the crops, the animals and keeping the wood box full. Milk cows needed to be milked twice a day, so a strong work ethic was instilled.
His academic standing was good and he was off to the University of Saskatchewan where he achieved his Bachelor of Education. His first teaching job was in Indian Head. It became his forever home. He was warmly welcomed by people here and he embraced the community. He taught his entire career in this community and drove the school bus. He continued with the school bus for 20 years after his retirement. He created close and lasting bonds with his students, inside and outside of the classroom. He planned and chaperoned mountain ski trips, canoe trips in Northern Saskatchewan and tours in Europe with Grade 11 and 12 students.
He has served on so many boards over the years, particularly in his retirement. Most significantly, the Indian Head Housing Authority, Council of St. Andrew’s United Church and chairman of the Condo Board at Sun View Place.
Roger loved good food: preparing it, serving it and most of all eating it. He often said he “lived to eat” – the richer and sweeter the food, the better he liked it.
He also had an appreciation for farming, nurtured by working with local farmers around Indian Head and working on his brother’s farm in Tisdale. Till the end of his life, he was always curious to know how things were going on the farm.
He had a very wide circle of friends and he loved to be able to do errands for them and to entertain them in his home with food and drinks. He found reward for himself in helping other people.
He loved to travel, most particularly his annual trip to Hawaii with a group of very close friends. Skiing in the Canadian Rockies was a favourite and he was proud of the fact that he got to ski for free after the age of 75 years. He loved time spent at the family cabin at Greenwater Lake, also with so many friends. Most recently, in November, he joined a group of 22 family members to spend a week at a resort near Cancun, Mexico. It was a most special time, particularly in light of the fact that it was his last big trip. The photo we have used here was taken at that time.
Less meaningful, but also important to Roger were his love of new, high end and shiny cars, gadgets and gizmos of any kind.
Roger is survived by his sister Marilyn Caughlin and George Peters; his brother Jim Caughlin and Glenda; and his aunt Josephine Kulyk. He had six nieces and nephews: Rebecca Whaley (Andrew MacKenzie), Daniel Whaley (Kristy), Lisa Mitchell (Paul), Cori Ellen Caughlin (Sebastian Chlebek), Robert Caughlin (Amy) and Paul Caughlin (Linda)
Also important to him were his 15 grand-nieces and nephews and numerous cousins.
The Celebration of his life will be held in St. Andrew’s United Church, Indian Head, Sask. on Saturday, April 12, 2025 at 2:00 p.m., officiated by Don Jewitt.
