Date of Death: October 18, 2024
Eileen Kirk (nee Herman) of Melville, SK, passed away peacefully on Friday, Oct. 18, 2024, at the age of 95, with family by her side.
Born on Aug. 29, 1929, in the Duff area, Eileen grew up on her family’s farm, attending Duff School and helping with both farm duties and housecleaning for neighbours. She was deeply involved in her community, serving as the organist at Saint Peter’s Lutheran Church in Duff.
In 1955, Eileen married Cameron, and together they farmed the original Kirk family homestead, located ten miles southwest of Melville and five miles east of Duff, until 1997, when they relocated to Melville. In addition to raising her family, she took on the role of caregiver for her grandparents, parents, and in-laws, offering them love and support in their later years. Her compassion and dedication to family were evident in every aspect of her life, and she was always there for her family and neighbours, lending a helping hand whenever she could.
She and Cameron shared their love for music and dancing, and Eileen wouldn’t miss a beat on the dance floor. Later in life, she and Cameron joined the Parkland Fiddlers, a group that brought them both much joy, happiness and friends.
Eileen’s life was marked by her hard work and dedication, whether tending her garden, baking her famous apple pies, or keeping a spotless home. Eileen also kept busy with her handiwork, creating beautiful quilts, blankets, and crocheted doilies and tablecloths, which she lovingly shared with family and friends, each piece bringing her immense pride and pleasure.
Eileen will be remembered not only for her skills in the kitchen and her passion for gardening but also for her warmth, generosity, and the happiness she found in life’s simple pleasures.
Eileen, the eldest of four children, was predeceased by her parents, Jacob (1973) and Louise Herman (nee Krahenbil) (2007); a sister in infancy; brother Ron (2003); brother Don (2021); brother-in-law Ron Bender (2012); sister-in-law Mary Herman (nee Smart) (2023); nephews Garnet Bender in infancy and Donald Kirk.
She will be deeply missed by her son, Garth; daughter Joanne and her husband, Jeff, of Calgary; sister Audrey Bender; sister-in-law Irene Herman (nee Daunheimer); as well as her many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Eileen was a devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt, neighbour, and friend whose warmth, generosity, and loving spirit touched the lives of all who knew her. Countless people will remember her for her ever-present smile, her willingness to help others, and her steadfast devotion to those she cared for.
Eileen’s funeral service was held Wednesday, October 23, 2024, at Zion Lutheran Church, Melville, with the Rev. Lowell Dennis officiating. Interment followed in the Duff Cemetery. Donations in memory of Eileen may be made to the Duff Cemetery Fund.
Arrangements were entrusted to Matthews Funeral Home, Melville.
