Hilda Kuhn passed away on Monday, Sept. 2, 2024, at the age of 81 years. She was an affectionate, caring and hardworking individual, who always put the needs of others ahead of her own.
Hilda was born on the family farm on May 22, 1943, in the district of Kipling, SK. She attended a one-room school, “Little Mountain School”, until Grade 3. She then attended “Hazel Valley School” until Grade 8. Every day, Hilda went four miles riding the same white horse named “Jackie” for eight years of country school. She graduated from Kipling High School.
Following Grade 12, Hilda left Kipling, went to Regina and found full-time employment at Regina General Hospital in the processing and sterilization room for four years. She then moved to Saskatoon and enrolled in a 42-week nursing assistance training program. Her clinical training was in Melville with her sister-in-law, Eunice Daku. Hilda graduated CNA/LPN nursing in 1963. She nursed at the Regina General Hospital for two years, then continued her career in Melville at St. Peter’s Hospital until she retired in 2008 after 35 years of service.
Hilda was a member of the Bekevar Presbyterian Church near Kipling. Later, she joined St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Melville and, most recently, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. She was also an active member of the German Heritage Club and volunteered countless hours with the hospital and churches.
Hilda loved all types of animals, especially dogs, as well as gardening, nature, walking every day with her dog, and cabin life at Crooked Lake for 58 years. She also loved baking, which included her famous butter tarts, angel food cake, cinnamon buns and cabbage rolls. You never left a meal without finishing with a sweet treat. Hilda loved to travel to many countries including numerous times to Germany, Alaska, Mexico, Jamaica, Hungary and Cuba, as well as a Caribbean Cruise.
Hilda was graciously blessed with three children, Adam, William and Monica. She was privileged to have “four precious angels”, her granddaughters, McKenna, Ashlyn, Chanel and Brielle.
Hilda is survived by and leaves to mourn: her son, William Kuhn, Ashlyn and Brielle; her daughter, Monica (Travis) Schutz, McKenna and Chanel; older brother Joe (Eunice) Daku; younger sister Dianne Daku-Owens; nieces and nephews Karen Taylor, Adrienne Flanders, Kristopher Owens, Gregory Owens and Kevin Daku; numerous cousins and many dear friends.
While out for a walk, Hilda met the “love of her life”, Bill Neill. They spent the last 22 years together, along with her faithful dog, Cali.
Hilda was predeceased by her loving parents, Joe and Velma Daku; her infant son, Adam; Hermann Kuhn and her brother-in-law, Arnold Kuhn.
Hilda’s funeral service was held Saturday, Sept. 7, 2024, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Melville, with the Rev. Rev. Ron Shumba officiating. Hilda’s final resting place is within the columbarium at Regina Memorial Gardens.
