Dennis Edward Alberts, known affectionately as Dennis to everyone who was lucky enough to cross his path, left the stage of life with the same grace and humor with which he lived it, on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, in Calgary, Alta. Born on June 26, 1945, in Melville, Sask., Dennis’s journey through life was one filled with laughter, love, and a fair share of mischief.
Dennis’s story began in the small town of Melville, where he grew up with a sparkle in his eye and a knack for finding joy in the simple things. He completed his high school diploma there, amidst friends and family who quickly learned that a day with Dennis was never dull. In 1964, Dennis embarked on a career with CNR, proving that even as a brakeman, conductor, and eventually an Engineer, he could conduct himself with both professionalism and a sense of humor. After 36 years of dedicated service, he retired in 2000, but not one to sit idle, he pursued his “dream job” as a Marshal and Starter at golf courses in Saskatoon, Speargrass and Palm Desert over the next 15 years.
Dennis’s life was a testament to the adage that the heart of the home is the family. He is survived by his loving wife, Linda Alberts; his proud sons, Jade (Katherine) and Bart, and his four adoring granddaughters, Raya, Lillian, Madeline and Graysen. His brothers, Doug (Terry), Blake (Barb), Murray (Lorrie); and his sister, Colleen (Mark) Stoecklein; along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, will continue to share the stories and laughs that Dennis left behind. Preceded in death by his parents, Kelly and Marjorie Alberts, Dennis now surely has the angels chuckling in heaven.
Dennis’s love for sports was nothing short of infectious. He was a die-hard fan of the Montreal Canadiens and Saskatchewan Roughriders, and there was nothing he enjoyed more than watching his favorite teams, except perhaps cheering on his sons and granddaughters in their various athletic endeavors. Dennis was the epitome of a sports enthusiast, from hockey to football, curling to golf, his passion was as boundless as his knowledge of the game.
Those who knew Dennis would agree that he was the life of the party, a man whose sense of humor, friendliness, and thoughtfulness made every encounter a memorable one. He had the rare ability to light up a room with his funny anecdotes and to make everyone feel like the most important person in the world. His laughter was contagious, his jokes were endless, and his heart was as big as his personality.
In a world that often takes itself too seriously, Dennis was a breath of fresh air. He never missed an opportunity to crack a joke, to share a kind word, or to offer a helping hand. His legacy is one of joy, kindness, and an unwavering commitment to his family, who will carry his spirit forward in each of their lives.
So, as we bid farewell to Dennis Alberts, let us do so with a smile on our faces, knowing that he would want us to remember the good times, the laughter, and the love. Dennis, you may have taken your final bow, but your encore will continue in the hearts of all those you’ve touched. Rest in peace, and know that your family, friends, and the countless lives you’ve brightened will never forget the gift that was you.
