Date of Death: July 21, 2023
With deepest sorrow, we say farewell to Delwyn “Del” Unterschute whose path through this life ended on Friday, July 21, 2023, at the Norquay Health Centre in Norquay, SK.
Del was born on June 15, 1942, to Arthur and Eloise Unterschute of Melville. He received his education in both the Success country school and in Melville. After Grade 10, he traveled to Winnipeg to train for his future occupation with the CNR in Melville as a carman. At this time, Del met and then married his soulmate, Margery Ruth Rathgeber, on May 21, 1966. Together they raised their family in Melville.
Del’s hobbies were hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, reading, cooking and spending time outdoors. Travel destinations Del and Marge shared included trips to Hawaii, Alaska, a European tour, and various adventures across North America. He loved life and made sure he made the most of it, and he truly loved people, treasuring the friendships he made along the way. Del adored his grandchildren, and they will fondly remember his kind wisdom and his playful, distinctive laugh.
After Marge’s death in 2007, Del decided to make McBride Lake his permanent home and built his home there in 2012.
Del was predeceased by his wife, Marge; his father and mother, Arthur and Eloise Unterschute; his father-in-law, Emil Rathgeber, and Emil’s wife, Vivian; his mother-in-law, Ruth Rathgeber; his granddaughter, Tiffany Ortynski; his brother, Garry Unterschute; his sister, Laraine Gelowitz; his brothers-in-law, Jack Miller, Ted Gelowitz, Doug McAuley and Robert Rathgeber; a niece, Lorie Gelowitz; and many aunts and uncles. He leaves to cherish his memory and to celebrate his life: his children, Leanne (Brad) Ortynski of Crooked Lake and Brett (Lacey) Unterschute of Norquay; five grandchildren, Riley Ortynski of Regina, Logan Ortynski of Fenwood, and Jasper, Declan and Kayce Unterschute of Norquay; his great-granddaughter, Quinn Gauthier-Barrett of Strathmore, AB; one sister, Yvonne McAuley of Regina; three brothers, Garth (Elaine) of Edmonton, AB, Garnet (Pat) and Murray (Lynette) of Melville; one brother-in-law, Lorne (Carol) Rathgeber of Tie Lake, B.C.; and many nieces and nephews.
Del’s funeral service was held Friday, July 28, 2023, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Melville, with the Rev. Ronald Shumba officiating. The organist, Marilyn Senyk, led in the hymns, “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms”, “Softly and Tenderly”, “How Great Thou Art” and “Amazing Grace”.
