After being diagnosed, Smitty became determined to cash a few more government cheques. He remained stoic for seven months until he finally decided to take a permanent nap. His rare cancer was impossible to conquer, but he gave it a valiant effort.
He lived life fully. A spunky kid who loved hockey (scored hat tricks regularly) and baseball (six home runs in one game for slugger Smith) he excelled at any sport he tried — except golf. He was also adventurous. He left his Melville, Sask. home at a young age to sow his wild oats. He worked in the mines in Manitoba, lived in Calgary, and then finally settled in Vancouver. His love of the ocean initially drew him to the West Coast. His love for his wife, Della, inspired him to make the city his home.
For 44 years, they had a rock and roll marriage. With a huge amount of passion and a deep connection, they formed a lifelong union. No kids, themed parties around their pool, travel, and socializing with friends, family and neighbours, created a dynamic life.
His true love was his cherry black ’66 Chevy Malibu. Road trips to the Okanagan to visit good friends were a must do, no matter how much gas that beast consumed.
A helpful (and somewhat nosey) neighbour, he was a Block Watch captain and made meaningful connections in the community. That tattooed, bad boy exterior was deceiving and hid a big softie inside. He did the same in the hospital and with home health supports, enchanting the nurses and care aides who adored their “Smitty.” Special thanks to the incredible care workers from St. Elizabeth (Team 12), Burnaby Hospital, and St Michael’s Hospice.
Everyone will miss him. In particular, his mother−in−law, who marvelled that he would always look so happy to see her. His vast array of friends, some in his life for over 50 years, were constantly checking in, never giving up hope he would once again be out and about.
He was predeceased by his parents, Walter and Cath; father−in−law, David; and nephew, Luke Dominique.
He is survived by his wife, Della; sister, Bonnie (Jack); brothers, Glenn (Helene), Wayne (Steph) and Donny (Jen); mother−in−law, Rosemary; sister−in−law, Rose (John); brothers−in−law, David (Anne) and Don (Linda); and 37 nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews — too many to mention, but they all know how much their uncle loved them. His beloved cats, Peaches and Tango, will also miss him.
A small private wake will take place at a later date. In Smitty’s honour, please have a cup of tea with an elderly friend or family member. If you wish to make a donation, Covenant House was one of his favourite charities.
Love you always.
