Dave Anthony Broda was born in Melville, Sask., to Anton (Tony) and Mary (nee Slobodzian) Broda on Aug. 13, 1946. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Henry’s Roman Catholic Church. He attended Wymer School, graduated from St. Henry’s High School and went on to tech school in Saskatoon.
Farming and sports were Dave’s greatest loves. He smiled from spring until fall with farming and all winter with curling, with baseball in between seasons. He was fortunate enough to have gone to St. Louis twice to watch his beloved Cardinals and got to see games in San Diego and Anaheim. The
Montreal Canadiens were always number 1 one to him.
Dave attended curling Briers from the East Coast to the West Coast. He was a director with the Saskatchewan Curling Association and executive council member of Region 5. His own curling took him across Saskatchewan and even into the United States. Attending curling venues was very special to him. In later years, he even mastered the stick.
Dave played ball with the Wallacetown B’s and the Killaly Athletics, where there was a lot of beer and many great games. He was a member of the Robert G. Combe VC Royal Canadian Legion #61 for 37 years, where he helped with bingo whenever called upon.
Dave and Karin led a very busy life, visiting their children in Las Vegas, Nev., and Sicamous, B.C.
Dave loved flowers and always gave flowers to Karin on every special occasion, and sometimes for no reason at all.The yard at the farm was a flowery heaven. Dave loved coming to the salon and teasing the daylights out of the women; they looked for him when he wasn’t there.
Dave and Karin were married on Oct. 12, 2013. When they came home from the First Continental Cup in Las Vegas, Dave was diagnosed with cancer. From his treatments, he developed lewy body dementia. On Nov. 13, 2015, he entered St. Paul Lutheran Home, where he passed away peacefully on Friday, Dec. 7, 2018 with his loving wife and family by his side.
Dave was predeceased by his parents, Anton and Mary Broda; and his beloved dog, Rocky.
He will always be loved and remembered by his wife, Karin; step-sons, Todd (Nadine) of Las Vegas, Nev., and Jarett of Sicamous, B.C; grandsons, Josh, Evan and William; sister, Marion (Tom) Reed of Edmonton, Alta.; brother, Garry (Elaine) of Calgary, Alta.; sister, Bernadette (Walter) LeBouef of Meadow Lake, Sask.; brother, Artie (Pat) of Melville, Sask.; brother, Tony (Laurie) of Grayson, Sask.; brother, Richard of Wadena, Sask.; brother, Shawn (Tracey) of Ft. Kent, Alta.; brothers-in-law, Les (Lorraine) Rathgeber of Crooked Lake, Sask. and Larry Rathgeber of Melville, Sask.; godchild, Amanda Reed; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
A vigil service took place on Thursday, Dec. 13, 2018, at St. Henry’s Roman Catholic Church, Melville, with the Rev. Fr. Andrew Sowa, OMI, presiding and Gary Hack presenting the eulogy.
Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Friday, Dec. 14, 2018, at St. Henry’s Roman Catholic Church, Melville, with Fr. Andrew celebrating. The music was led by Len Gadica, the cross bearer was Evan Richardson, and the readers were Tannis Ottenbreit and Brittany Smoliak.
Interment took place in St. Henry’s Parish Cemetery with Todd Richardson, Josh Richardson, Jarett Richardson, Quinn Broda, John Broda and Levi Broda acting as pallbearers.
Arrangements were entrusted to Matthews Funeral Home, Melville.
