SCHICK – Oscar Schick was born on Jan. 22, 1932 on the farm west of Killaly, Sask., to Katherine (nee Lang) and John A. Schick. He was the youngest of 11 siblings and seven step-siblings.
Oscar was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Killaly. He attended Prairie School and worked on the farm. As a young man, he moved to Moose Jaw and worked for a moving company. He met Helen Tressel at the wedding of Ernie and Heddy Schick, and they were married on June 21, 1957. They lived in Regina until moving to the family farm in 1959.
Oscar and Helen enjoyed farm life. Oscar was mechanically-inclined, did all his own repairs and was always ready to help out neighbours and friends with welding or repairing implements. Arlene could always count on him when it came to looking after her vehicles.
Oscar loved animals, and you would often see him around the farm with a cat perched on his shoulder. He was especially honoured to receive the Century Farm Award in 2014.
Ball and hockey were Oscar’s favourite sports. He spent many hours taking Brad to his hockey games and thoroughly enjoyed watching his three grandsons play.
Oscar’s health declined, and he moved to St. Paul Lutheran Home in the fall of 2014 where he passed away on Monday, Aug. 20, 2018.
Oscar leaves to mourn and celebrate his life: his wife of 61 years, Helen (nee Tressel); daughter, Arlene Thickett (Walter); son, Bradley; grandchildren, Taylor (Alanna), Colton, Brennan and Darrell (Page) Thickett; sister-in-law, Barbara Schick; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral service for Oscar was held on Friday, Aug. 24, 2018 at Christ Lutheran Church,
Neudorf, with the Rev. Kim Sherwin presiding. The pianist, Nadine Gattinger, led the congregation in the singing of the hymns, “Lord, Take My Hand and Lead Me,” “Children of the Heavenly Father” and “The Lord’s My Shepherd.” Oscar’s daughter, Arlene Thickett, gave
the eulogy. His grandchildren were the honorary bearers, and grandson, Taylor Schick, was the urn bearer.
Interment followed in Christ Lutheran Cemetery, Neudorf.
Arrangements were entrusted to Matthews Funeral Home, Melville.
