It is with great sadness and sorrow that the family of William J. Chapiel of Melville, SK, announce his passing on Monday, Jan. 22, 2018 with his family at his side.
William “Bill” Chapiel was born to Stella and Anthony Chapiel on Aug. 15, 1921 in Melville, one of 14 children.
He received his education at St. Henry’s School in Melville. On Sept. 9, 1939 Bill enlisted in the 1st Yorkton Light Anti-Air Craft Battery RCA He was proud to serve his country. After he was discharged from the army he returned to Melville.
In 1945 Bill started his working career with the Canadian National Railway, as a brakeman and retiring in 1979 as a conductor.
On July 19, 1946 Bill was united in Marriage to LaVerne Bodnarek and shared 71 years of marriage. This marriage was blessed with seven children, 18 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
Bill had many interests in his life which included coaching both baseball and hockey, and gardening.
Bill was a active member of St. Henry’s Church. He enjoyed years of travelling abroad with LaVerne, his favorite place being Portugal.
Bill will be fondly remembered by his wife, LaVerne; his seven children, Renice (Don) Schindel, Deborah (Lloyd) Frohlick, Terry (Gayle) Chapiel, Laurie (Jim) Webber, Christopher (Bonny) Chapiel, Colleen (Blair) Ulmer and Jeff (Tina) Chapiel; 18 grandchildren, Tim, Chad, Raquel, Becky, Nena, Tara, Bridgette, Aimee, Sarah, Joshua-Cain, Kalin, Jenna, Wil, Nathan, Mackenzie, Nicolas, Jessie and Skye; 24 great-grandchildren, Whitney, Breanna, Hunter, Mercedes, Boston, Dylan, Haley, Kennedy, Teryn, Parker, Logan, Maya, Jorja, Ethan, Truan, Kaige, Aidah, Emma, Preston, Berkley, Kash, Weston, Jevaeh and Jahzion; sisters, Edna Corbett, Donna Salsbury, Francis Clayholt, Elsie Dyce, Gerri Parks and brother, Edward Chapiel; sisters-in-law, May Bodnarek and Jay McPhail; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Predeceased by his parents, Stella and Anthony; sisters, Ruth in infancy, Anne Whittaker, Helen Sass and Cecile Berquist; brothers, Charles, John and Bernard; father and mother-in-law, John and Victoria Bodnarek; brothers-in-law, Nelson Bodnarek and Ronald Bodnarek.
Prayer Services were held on Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. from St. Henry’s Roman Catholic Church in Melville with Sister Teresa Kreiser as the Presider. The Funeral Mass was celebrated on Thursday, Jan. 25, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. from St. Henry’s Roman Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Andrew Sowa OMI as the Celebrant.
Arrangements were by Bailey’s funeral and Cremation Services, Melville.
