Doreen Schlechter (Wendland) of Yorkton, Sask., and formerly of Bangor, Sask., passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2018.
Doreen was born at Grayson Sask. on Nov. 11, 1933 to Henry and Johanna Wendland. She attended Haver School. The family then moved to Melville, Sask. in 1948 for one year and in 1949 her parents bought a farm north of Bangor.
Doreen worked for Alice Huber as a telephone operator and this is where she met Joseph Schlechter. They were united in marriage on Oct. 29, 1951. Joe and Doreen had eight children. They purchased their first home in Bangor from Bill and Marion Faye and lived there, farming just out of the town for 12 years. They decided to purchase a farm from Bob and Isabel Williams, west of Bangor, and lived and farmed there for 19 years.
Doreen worked at Morris Lodge in Bangor while being active on the farm. In 1982 they moved back into Bangor and purchased a home from Paul and Margaret Hudy where Joe had been the rural route mail carrier and Doreen then took over as the post mistress.
On Nov. 22, 1998, Joe passed away and Doreen remained living and working there. Doreen retired from Canada Post after 25 years and in 2008 she moved to Melville. In 2012, Doreen decided to move to Yorkton, where she remained until her passing.
Doreen was involved with St. Michael’s Church in Bangor, and the Catholic Women’s Auxiliary, being a member for 50 years. Also, the Bangor New Horizons Club, Bangor rec board, Bangor Curling Club, Morris Lodge, Rural Crime Watch and the Qu’Appelle Valley Recreation Association.
She enjoyed gardening, loved to watch curling and also took great pride in watching the Toronto Blue Jays and she would often meet her friends for coffee or a meal out. She loved to dance! She would often travel to Regina and various local towns to attend a senior’s dance. This was a passion until she was not able to do so anymore.
Doreen is predeceased by her husband, Joseph (Nov. 22 1998); her son, Dennis (April 21, 2008); a step-granddaughter, Ava Buitenhuis (Jan. 10, 2012); her parents, Henry and Johannna Wendland; sisters, Sophie Wendland at the age of nine and Evelyn Gelowitz;  brothers, Frank and Arnold Wendland; in-laws, Tony Gelowitz, Kay Wendland; parents-in-law, Karl and Margaret Schlechter; in-laws, Tony Varga, Bill and Irene Schlechter, Margaret Ward, Maxine Schlechter, Rynold Schlechtern and Eva Schlechter.
She leaves to mourn her passing, seven children, 12 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and three step-great grandchildren; Dennis’ daughter, Jessica Graham (David), Magdalena and Baxter; Larry (Donna), Blaine (Chrissy) and Peyton, Tina Funk (Darren), Nathen and Elyssa;  Gail Jordens (Donnie), Mark (Char Cholik), Colleen (Jared Buitenhuis), Cason and Blake;  Shirley, Nolan (Jamie) and Brezlyn; Bev Kitch (Tom), Travis (Lisa Marie) Sawyer and Emerson, Kirby Zak (Blake), Brandon and Presley; Allan (Darlene), Chelsea and Kingston, Jared (Allyssa), Kayle and Kase; Cathy Hershmiller (Clint), Jeremy (Melissa), Brad (Justina), Mason and Khloe;  and Nadine Roberts (Les), Tylane (Adamik Frumen) and Koal. Also brothers, Clarence Wendland, Harold Wendland;  sisters-in-law, Dolly Wendland, Gloria Wendland, Clara Wendland;  brothers-in-law, Len Schlechter, Charlie Schlechter, Frank (Hilda) Schlechter; sister-in-law, Betty Varga, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and special friends.
The funeral service was held on Monday, Jan. 15, 2018 from the Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Rev. Fr. Louis Nguyen of St. Gerard’s RC Church as celebrant.  Blaine Schlechter gave the eulogy. The lectors were Tina Funk, Kirby Zak and Nolan and Chelsea Schlechter. The intercessions were led by Donald Ward.  Music was provided by Len Gadica and Len Varga.
Interment took place in St. Michael’s Parish Cemetery at Bangor with Tylane and Koal Roberts serving as the urnbearers. A reception followed at the Bangor Community Hall.
