Anna as born on Dec. 12, 1924, to Anton and Maria (Schmidt) Werth and was the fourth youngest of 12 children.
She was born and raised on her father’s farm at Grenfell and was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church at Tiree.
Anna and Edward Maurer were married at the Tiree Church on Oct. 30, 1947, following which she moved to Edward’s family farm at Duff. They retired to Melville in Oct. 1990.
Anna took part in many activities — she sang in the church choirs at both Duff and Melville, held the position of president of the Ladies Aide at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church at Duff; taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School in Duff and Melville, was the Sunday school superintendent for a number of years in Melville, acted as the recording secretary for one term at Zion Lutheran Church in Melville; was a director on the museum board at Duff; and was a director on the board of the Melville and District Home Care Corporation for eight years when it first started in Melville.
Anna had many interests. She spent time as a member of the art club and was vice-president for one year during which she helped to organize three art shows. She enjoyed quilting and was a member of the Melville Quilters Guild. Anna was artistic and musically inclined; she enjoyed drawing with several different media, painting, crafts, leather work, playing the piano and organ, and she had a special love of flowers.
Anna entered St. Paul Lutheran Home in Melville in Nov. 2015, where she passed peacefully on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2017.
Anna was predeceased by her parents; 11 siblings and their spouses; a daughter at birth; her son, Mark; and son-in-law, Sam Stankov.
She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Edward; her daughter, June; her son, Maurice (Sheila); a daughter-in-law, Bev; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Lydia Weisbrot; and many nieces and nephews.
Anna’s funeral service was held Friday, Dec. 8, 2017 at Zion Lutheran Church, Melville with the Rev. John Nieminen officiating. The organist, Dorothy Herman, and the choir led in the hymns “The Lord’s My Shepherd,” “Just As I Am, Without One Plea” and “Abide with Me,” and the choir sang “Be Still, My Soul” as an anthem. Interment followed in the Duff Cemetery with Jobina Isnor, Bart Maurer, Cody Maurer, Collette Maurer, Jerrod Marsh and Alvin Frick acting as pallbearers.
