Sandra Ethel Hanishewsky (nee Douglas) was born in Ottawa, ON, on May 21, 1955. Sandy passed away Monday, Oct.16, 2017, at St. Peter’s Hospital, Melville, with both her children at her side.
As a young child, Sandy moved to Manitoba with her father, who was a member of the RCMP. They moved around Manitoba, then landed in Flin Flon, where she graduated from high school in 1973. She met and later married Donald Hanishewsky in 1973 and had two children, Ronald and Misty.
Sandy was involved with the SJHL Melville Millionaires executive, church council, Melville and District Quilters Guild and the Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life. She worked as a waitress at the King George Hotel, then moved on to Saskatchewan Crop Insurance, starting Nov. 2, 1987, until her retirement in Oct. 2016. Sandy was very into crafts like knitting mittens, sweaters and blankets for anyone who needed some extra warmth. In addition to those crafts, she began quilting,
which she enjoyed with her quilter friends every second Saturday in Moosomin.
Sandy loved spending time with, and was most proud of, her grandchildren and their interests and activities. She never missed an event, even on a beautiful winter stormy day. They will miss the special, unique, made-with-love Christmas stocking stuffers and the special one-on-one birthday meal celebrations.
Sandy was predeceased by her father, Ronald Douglas.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her children, Ron (Lesley) and Misty (Wade) and grandchildren Marley, Kaeden, Alexandria and Adam; stepmother, Nancy Douglas; mother-in-law, Adele Hanishewsky; sisters, Brenda, Jill, Joanne and
Karen; brothers, Bob, Brian, Jim and Mike; her dog, Lacie; her friends and others who knew and loved her.
Sandy’s funeral service was held Thursday, Oct. 19, 2017, at Matthews Funeral Home, Melville, with the Rev. Kim Sherwin officiating. The organist, Gaylene Matthews, led in the hymns “Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee,” “In the Garden” and “Softly and Tenderly Jesus is Calling.” At Sandy’s request, her granddaughter Marley Hanishewsky sang a favourite song, “On the Wings of a Snow White Dove.” All those who knew and loved Sandy were considered honorary pallbearers, and the urn bearer was Brenda Zelko. Interment will take place in the Melville City Cemetery at a later date.
