Mrs. Rose (nee Blahut) Burant of Yorkton, Sask., widow of the late Ambrose Burant, passed away peacefully with family by her side on Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at the Foam Lake Jubilee Nursing Home. She was 89 years of age.
Rose was born on July 16, 1927 in the Willowbrook district, a daughter of John and Anne (nee Kornak) Blahut. When she was a child, her family moved frequently and finally settled in the Wroxton district.
Rose moved to Yorkton in her teenage years, where she met Ambrose Burant of Waldron, Sask. They were married on Nov. 2, 1947. They made their home in the Elrose district where Ambrose worked on a farm and they began their family. They returned to the Hilltop district in the early 1950s where they started their own family farm and a construction business. Here their family grew to a family of five children.
Rose enjoyed her life on the farm as a housewife and raised five children, often on her own, when Ambrose was away with his construction business. She became a member of the Hilltop Ladies Circle and hosted many an afternoon tea and meeting. She was an excellent cook, always providing a good meal with loaves of delicious fresh home-baked bread. It was only later in life, over a Christmas dinner, that she told her family that she never really liked to cook — it was quite a shock to all of them.
Rose was a very quiet person, but always enjoyed family and visitors. Visits from her grandchildren always put a smile on her face. Rose enjoyed playing cards and taught many of her grandchildren the rules of numerous card games. She was quite athletic in her younger years and enjoyed playing softball and curling. Later on, when grandchildren arrived, she would travel miles to watch them curl, play ball, hockey or speed skate, always keeping a record book of statistics.
Ambrose and Rose moved from the farm to Yorkton in 2007 and lived there until 2011 when Ambrose passed away. She then moved into Morris Lodge in Bangor, Sask. and lived there until she became a resident at the Foam Lake Jubilee Home in 2014 where she lived out her days. It was a struggle for her, as she could not always remember who you were, but there always seemed to be a little sparkle in her eyes when she did.
Rose was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Ambrose; her brothers, Mike, James, Henry, John, Walter, Alec and Nick Blahut; her sisters, Anne Matcyk and Mary Romanowich; and her son-in-law, Don Powell.
Rose is survived by her sons, Ken (Linda) of Stoney Plain, Alta and their children, Lyle (Lisa), Curtis (Nookua) and Trevor (Melanie); Doug of Kelowna, B.C. and his children, Courtney (Cole), Travis and Kyliegh; Randy (Carol) of Qualicum Beach, B.C. and their children, Melany (Victor) and Andrew (Brit); her daughters, Sandra (Larry) of Waldron, Sask. and her children, Wade (Trisha) and Marsha (Chet); and Gail (Howard) of Hilltop, Sask.; as well as 12 great-grandchildren, Amanda, Jessica, Destany, Justin, James, Katilyn, Alyssa, Ryan, Tyler, Sarah, Joshua and Carter.
Rose’s family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the Foam Lake Jubilee Nursing Home for their compassionate care over the past three years. It was endearing to hear them refer to her as “Auntie Rose.”
A service to celebrate Rose’s life was held on Monday, May 15, 2017 from the Chapel of Christie’s Funeral Home in Yorkton, Sask. with Shelly Morris officiating. Words of tribute and eulogy were shared by grandchildren, Marsha Munro and Trevor Burant. The organist, Carla Laycock, led the congregation in the singing of the hymns, “Morning Has Broken,” “In The Garden,” “The Lord of the Dance” and “This Little Light of Mine” as a recessional.
The cremation committal followed in the Waldron Cemetery with grandson, Lyle Burant, serving as the urn bearer.
