Winnifred Schmidt (nee Goebel) of Neudorf, Sask., peacefully went to be with our Lord, Wednesday March 8, 2017 at the age of 83.
Winnie was born at Neudorf, Sask., on the 18th of May, 1933, to Fredrick and Philipina (nee Tressel) Goebel. She was baptized and confirmed by Pastor K. W. Sterzen at Zion Lutheran Church south of Neudorf.
Winnie grew up and worked on the family farm south of Neudorf. After attending school in Neudorf, she worked at Schramm’s grocery, Schick’s grocery and the Leland Hotel.
Winnie was married to Edward (Eddie) Schmidt on Nov. 19, 1971 at Christ Lutheran Church, Neudorf. They took over Edward’s family farm and lived there until the fall of 1975 when they moved into Neudorf. They continued to farm until 1982 before retiring from farm life. After retiring, they enjoyed visiting and playing cards with family and friends. They also enjoyed playing bingo and the odd trip to the casino.
In July 1994, Edward suffered a severe stroke which left him partially paralysed. Winnie became his primary caregiver, dedicating her life to his care until his passing on May 25, 2004.
Aunt Winnie was very special in the lives of all her nieces and nephews. She was always there for them and was a big part of their lives. She will be greatly missed.
Winnie was predeceased by her beloved husband, Edward; parents, Fredrick and Philipina Goebel; brother, Karl (age 12); siblings, Allen and Elizabeth in infancy; brothers-in-law, Ernie, Walter and Gordon; and sister-in-law, Evelyn.
She leaves to mourn her passing and cherish her memory: her sister, June (Arthur) Yeadon; her sisters-in-law, Olga, Marjorie, Adeline and Clara; as well as many loved nieces and nephews and many dear friends.
Funeral service was held on Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at Christ Lutheran Church with Rev. Victoria Mwamasika presiding. Murray and Marla Yeadon presented the tribute, and Sarah Yeadon, Ava Yeadon, Andrew Yeadon and Erin Yeadon did readings. Pianist, Nadine Gattinger, led the congregation in the hymns, “Each Step I Take,” “Abide With Me” and “Sweet Hour of Prayer.”
