It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Herb Goebel. “Say not in grief he is no more, but live in thankfulness that he was.”
On May 1, 1937, Herb was born in Neudorf, Sask. He worked in Balcarres, Sask. and Wawanesa, Man. before settling in Winnipeg in 1965. He worked at Versatile for 32 years, serving as union president and secretary for many years. He retired in January 1998 and joined the Versatile Seniors Association where, for many years, served on the executive committee. Herb was well-respected by all who knew him and made friends wherever he went.
Herb’s love of travel found him touring throughout North America. One of his favourite places was the Grand Ole Opry. He loved to bowl at the church on Friday afternoons, watching sports, going out for dinner and spending weekends with his son, John. Herb was an avid sports enthusiast, being a fastball umpire for 10 years and going to the Goldeyes baseball and Winnipeg Jets hockey games.
Remaining to cherish Herb’s memory are his son, John (St. Amant Centre); brother, Don; sisters, Margaret (Donald), Eunice, Thelma and Susan (Dave); and many nieces and nephews. Also brothers and sisters-in-law and special friend, Mary Mitchell.
He was predeceased by his loving wife, Dianne; father, Jacob; mother, Ottilia; sisters, Alice and Jean; as well as brothers, Clarence and Robert. Herb will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all those who knew him.
Herb’s funeral service was be held on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. in Lutheran Church of the Cross, 560 Arlington Street, Winnipeg, with Rev. Leon Gilbertson, presider.
Interment followed in the Waverley Memorial Gardens, 1501 Waverley Street, after fellowship at the Church.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the wonderful staff at Riverview Health Centre, 3E Palliative Care Ward for the kindness and care that Herb received during his brief time there.
