Helen Gamracy of St. Paul Lutheran Home, Melville, Sask., widow of the late Steve Gamracy, entered her eternal rest on Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2017 at St. Paul Lutheran Home. She was 85 years of age.
Helen was born on Nov. 9, 1931 in the Jasmin district of Saskatchewan, a daughter to Nick and Anna (nee Wira) Antonishyn. Helen received her education at the Chiselhurst School near Parkerview, Sask. She received her Grade 8 education, then started helping her parents on the farm.
On July 18, 1948, Helen was united in marriage to Steve Gamracy at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton. The couple farmed near Birmingham and in 1950 their first and only child was born, Glen.
In 1975, Helen started working at the King George Hotel in Melville and became main cook. Helen and Steve moved into Melville in 1978 where she continued to work at King George until her retirement.
Helen enjoyed gardening, looking after the yard, cooking, bowling and walking. Most important was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was very proud of her great-great-grandchild.
In 1997, Steve passed away and Helen continued to reside on her own. In January 2016 Helen became a resident at St. Paul Lutheran Home.
Predeceased by her husband, Steve; her parents, Nick and Anna Antonishyn; sister, Irene Chosen; brothers-in-law, Frank Sopel, Bill Wowk and Lester Blixrud.
Helen leaves to cherish her memory: her son, Glen (Rosalyn) and their children, Kevin (Tanya), Kendra and Lana (Joel); great grandchildren, Austin (Megan), Taylor (Chance), Reese, Jeremy, Ben, Patience, Locke, Rhett and Charis; one great-great-granddaughter, Lily; sisters, Olga Sopel and Caroline Blixrud (Murray); brother-in-law, John Chosen; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
The funeral mass was celebrated on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2017 from St. Henry’s Roman Catholic Church in Melville with Rev. Fr. Mieczyslaw Burdzy OMI as the celebrant.
Arrangements were by Bailey’s Funeral Home, Melville.
