Clara Meyer of Melville, Sask., passed away Friday, Jan. 13, 2017 at the age of 98 years.
Clara Margarete was born Oct. 24, 1918 in Langenburg, Sask. to Heinrich and Maria Bessel. At a young age, she moved to a farm in the Melville area. She attended Melville View School, travelling there with the horse and buggy in the summer and horse and cutter in the winter.
Clara married Rudolf Meyer Oct. 31, 1943. They lived on the farm for five years and then moved to Melville. Clara and Rudolf had two daughters, Pearl and Faye. Clara worked at Swift’s in Melville for several years. While working at Swift’s, she met two life-long friends — one of her dear friends, Elvina Yathon is here with us today.
Clara loved to knit and make afghans, mitts, sweaters and stuffed bears for everyone in her family. She was an excellent baker and made the tastiest brown bread and cinnamon buns. Clara’s garden and flowers were her pride and joy. Her faith was strong, and she was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, where she served on the altar guild for many years.
Playing cards was Clara’s favourite pastime, and she taught all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren how to play “Four Kings in the Corner.” She also loved to bowl.
Clara leaves to cherish her memory: her daughters, Pearl Ulmer (Wilf Goebel) and Faye Meyer (Larry Hiles); her grandchildren, Dee (Scott) Shearer, Shae-Lynne (Chris) Attwater, Nadine (Ken) Rather and Chris Hiles. She cherished her visits with her seven great-grandchildren, Emma, Ethan, Elena, Katryna, Reese, Araina and Amayah. She is also survived by one stepsister, Anne McLelland.
Clara was a very gentle and caring person and was always happy and cheerful. In her 98 years, Clara touched many lives and will be forever missed by her family and friends.
Clara’s funeral service was held Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2017 at Matthews Funeral Home, Melville with the Rev. Victoria Mwamasika officiating. Scripture lessons were read by Shae-Lynne Attwater and Ethan Edwards and the eulogy was presented by Dee Shearer and Nadine Rather. Soloist, Leah Goebel, sang “Beyond the Sunset” as a special tribute to Clara. The organist, Gaylene Matthews, led in the hymns, “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” and “How Great Thou Art.” Everyone who touched Clara’s life was considered an honorary pallbearer.
Interment followed in the Melville City Cemetery with family members acting as pallbearers.
