Calvin was born in the Wroxton area of Saskatchewan on Sept. 25, 1927 to Helen and Paul (nee Orth) Thies. Helen and Paul farmed on the Henry G. Thies homestead until 1944. They then moved to the Churchbridge district and continued to farm. In 1946 they moved to a farm in the Bredenbury area.
Calvin spent his early years attending Two Creek School and then graduated Grade 12 from Churchbridge High School. He attended the college of Vocational Agriculture at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon in 1946 and returned home to farm. While selling honey in Bredenbury, Calvin met Charlotte Bonnett and they were married in 1960.
Calvin spent his career as a grain and cattle farmer, harvesting with his brother, Wilfred Thies, each year. In early 2000, Calvin and Charlotte sold the farm and retired to Churchbridge. Charlotte passed away in 2004. Melville was Calvin’s home for the past six years.
Hunting, curling, camping and travelling to places such as Alaska, Hawaii, Texas and Mexico were passions of his. Calvin was very involved with his family, often quitting seeding in June to watch a ball game. The Bredenbury Lions Club, the Trinity Lutheran Church and the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool were among his many community involvements.
The family would like to sincerely thank the nurses and staff of St. Paul Lutheran Home for the loving care and kindness provided.
