Date of Birth: February 3, 1916

Date of Death: June 12, 2016

Elizabeth “Betty” Theresa (nee Hickie) Sapara, widow of the late Joe Sapara, entered her eternal rest on Sunday, June 12, 2016 at St. Paul Lutheran Home, Melville, at the age of 100 years.
Betty was born on Feb. 3, 1916 near Killaly, Sask., a daughter to Frank and Katherine (nee Hershmiller) Hickie. Betty received her education at Killaly School. After her schooling she worked for various farmers in the Killaly district.
She was united in marriage to Joseph Sapara on July 21, 1936 at St. Elizabeth’s Roman Catholic Church, Killaly. They then made their home in Killaly where they raised three children. In 1968 Betty started at St. Paul Lutheran Home in housekeeping. She worked there for 13 years.
She loved curling and enjoyed watching fastball and baseball. One sports day a foul ball hit Betty in the face breaking her glasses. This happened in 1953. Over the years she saw 10 doctors because her eye would become inflamed and sore. In 1972 Dr. Griffith found a sliver of glass that was imbedded in her eye, which he finally removed.
In 1965, Betty was a passenger in their 1957 Chev. Aunt Winnie was driving with two other ladies in the back — they were going curling to Melville. As they were coming up the hill at Ivor Tank’s a big draft horse was coming up the other side. The horse went through the windshield, it’s head landing in Betty’s lap. Needless to say sporting activities were quite dangerous for her.
Betty was a member of the CWL, parish choir and a leader of the 4-H club. She enjoyed gardening, knitting, sewing, crocheting, reading, watching the Blue Jays, playing cards and bingo. Her most enjoyment was her children and grandchildren.
Predeceased by her parents; her husband, Joe (1988); her son, Bruce (2000); her daughter Leona (2015) granddaughter, Cynthia (2015); daughter-in-law, Annie Sapara; brother, Albert (Pauline); sister, Matilda (Mike); and two brothers in infancy.
