ZELKO – Margarete Zelko of Melville, Sask., widow of the late Steve Zelko, passed away at St. Peter’s Hospital, Melville, on Saturday, May 28, 2016 at the age of 95 years.
Margarete was born to Philip and Carolina Zorn on Monday, Aug. 16, 1920 in Sitaurovka, (Austria) Poland.
Margarete Zelko was one of the happiest people we know. She had a zest for life, and she loved to socialize with others. She enjoyed gardening and would not go a year without planting potatoes. She loved to talk, sing and dance and always enjoyed entertaining people who dropped in to visit.
Margarete has left us with many happy memories and lots of sayings like: “I’m going home to put my happy clothes on”, “if I should live so long I will………”, “eat for the hunger that comes”.
She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Margarete is survived by: daughter, Irma (Joe) Materi; sons, Bob (Brenda) Zelko and Jim (Sheri) Zelko; step-children, Ed (Shirley) Zelko and their children, Yancy and Wanda; Ottcar (Doris) Zelko and their children, Darcy, Shane and Carrie; Linda (Dennis) Alberts and their children, Jade and Bart; Eleanor Hawley and her children, Dawn and Jason; grandchildren, Mark, Ricky and Wade Materi and Robin Zelko, great-grandchild, Chevina Materi; nieces, Adelheid (Joachim), Renate (Uli), Lydia (Don) and Lil; nephew, Arnold (Siegried); and cousin, Art (Valerie) Sanders.
Margarete was predeceased by her first husband, Johann Wagner; second husband, Steve Zelko; son, Helmut Wagner; parents, Philip and Carolina Zorn; brothers, Philip, Heinrich and Peter; sisters, Cristina, Katherine, Ellenor, Maria, Elizabeth and Carolina; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral service for Margarete was held on Thursday, June 2 at 11 a.m. from St. Paul’s
Lutheran Church with the Rev. Kim Sherwin officiating. The eulogy was given by Brenda and Sheri Zelko, then Robin Zelko joined Brenda and Sheri for the readings. Gaylene Matthews was the organist and accompanied the congregation in singing, “Jesus, Still Lead On,” “Blessed Assurance,” “In the Garden” and “How Great Thou Art.” Honorary pallbearers were special friends, Walter Miller, Virginia Henderson, Chris Parachoniak and Jim and Edna Brock.
Interment followed in the Melville City Cemetery with Murray Schuster, Ron Gottschalk, Grant Schmidt, Garry Tank, Ken Karius and Jim Brown acting as pallbearers.
Arrangements were entrusted to Matthews Funeral Home, Melville.
