DENESUIK – Lena (nee Chychrun) Denesuik, Nov. 9, 1925 – Dec. 7, 2015, wife of the late Gordon Denesuik.
It is with great sadness that our family announces the peaceful passing of our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Lena Denesuik, on Monday, Dec. 7, 2015 at St. Paul Lutheran Home in Melville, Sask.
Lena was born on Nov. 9, 1925 to Jacob and Justyna (nee Pidhorodetski) Chychrun on the farm in the Goodeve District of Saskatchewan. As Lena got older, she attended Halech School. After school she would help on the family farm and on the weekends she would enjoy going to barn dances with family and friends, as well as playing ball on a Goodeve team. When Lena completed her education, she worked for A-Candling Station in Goodeve. Her sister Mary and Anton Churko needed help in their store in Jedburgh, so Lena ventured there to assist in their business.
After a long courtship, Gordon proposed. They were united in marriage on June 8, 1952 at St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Goodeve and resided on the Denesuik farm. Lena and Gordon then started a new chapter in their life. Here they were blessed with two children and later moved to Hamilton, Ont. A few years later they decided to move back and continued the farm life and were blessed with three more children.
Besides farming, Lena was involved in the UCWL committee and the Blue Bonnet Club. When mom wasn’t busy with the farm or tending to we children, she enjoyed crocheting, knitting, gardening, tending to her flowers, playing cards, bingo, going to the casino, but most of all she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Her home was always full of company, laughter and one more thing she made sure of was that you never left hungry.
Predeceased by her husband, Gordon in 2007; her parents, Jacob and Justyna Chychrun; her sisters, Nellie (Tony) Poloyko, Mary (Anton) Churko, Olga (Eddie) Barabash, Nettie (Mike) Sememiuk; her brothers, Bill (Anne) Chychrun, Mike Chychrun, and Larry Chychrun; brother-in-law, John Catchuk; sister-in-law, Anne Chychrun.
