Jack Haas
May 6, 1927 – Oct. 17, 2015
Jacob “Jack” Haas was born in the Grayson area, not far from the Columbia School, on May 6, 1927. Jack was the tenth of 12 children born to Frank and Helen Haas. In 1928 his family moved to the Mariahilf area where he attended Mariahilf School and completed Grade 8.
He worked hard by keeping busy with farm chores alongside his parents and siblings, milking cows, feeding pigs, chickens and geese, helping with seeding and harvest time and gathering wood. In the late 1940s, Jack got a job working at the logging camps in British Columbia. In 1950 he bought a farm from Lawrence Hoedel, just south of Killaly.
It was in the summer of 1951 that he met the love of his life, Caroline Fuchs, at a sports day, and they married on Nov.10, 1953 in Grayson. In 1991 his son, Ken, took over the farm, and Jack and Caroline semi-retired and moved to an acreage just south of the family farm.
Jack had a good sense of humour. He enjoyed driving combine and helping his children with yardwork when he could. He loved to go to auction sales (for treasures), watch Monday night wrestling with Caroline and visit with whoever happened to appear at their doorstep.
In his later years, Jack began gardening and continued to do the yard work. His favourite hobby was sewing things by
recycling leather; neighbours and friends would bring him tarps, jackets and shoes to repair.
This past September, Jack and Caroline moved to Melville. On Oct. 17, 2015, Jack passed away peacefully with family by his side.
Jack was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Helen (nee Reising); in-laws, Frank and Pauline (nee Exner) Fuchs; brothers, Joseph in infancy, Frank, John and Bill; sisters, Annie Baer, Katherine Exner, Emily Mallery, Gertrude Haas, Mary Krumenacker and Marge Chastkavich; brothers-in-law, Henry Baer, George Exner, Art Mallory, Joe Krumenacker, Joe Chastkavich, Trowgert Radies, Walter Fuchs, Bill Fuchs, Ernie Fuchs and Arnold Banga; sisters-in-law, Alice Haas, Marjorie Haas and Sylvia Fuchs; grandchildren, Jillian Zerr and Jason Haas.
