Louis is survived by his loving wife, Carol Matity (Wakeford); three sons, David (Donalda) Matity, Jeffrey (Lori) Matity and Jason (Sharon Gerein) Matity; three grandchildren,
Mitchell (Denise) Matity, Kaitlyn (Bryce) Bullock and Benjamin Matity; three great-grandchildren, Brynnlee Matity, Rayna Matity and Nash Bullock; his brother, John (Marilyn) Matity (Regina); in-laws Janice Matity (Moose Jaw), Jean (Richard) Messer, Rena Sims, Dwight (Anne) Wakeford, Jack (Rene) Wakeford and Trudy Matity; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In 1955, Louis, at the age of 19, was hired by the Canadian Pacific Railway after working in Moose Jaw in the plumbing and electrical trades. He first worked on telegraphs, where climbing a pole became one of his proudest skills. After a brief absence from CP rail, he was hired in 1959 as a foreman in the signal and communications division. Louis served the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen until his retirement in 1991.
In 1962, Louis married the love of his life, Carol, and they went on to raise three boys. His railroad career took Louis, Carol and little Dave across the country from Dryden, ON, to Mortlach, SK, and several points in between. He pulled home their small trailer that all three lived in due to Louis’s various assignments across the country. In 1966, the couple settled in Whitewood, first in town, then on the farm south of Whitewood where they raised their three sons and worked hard grain farming, raising chickens, turkeys and geese and maintained their giant garden and property.
Louis was very active in civic and religious organizations, becoming an active member of the Elks, and a Gideon. He also made himself available to volunteer for coaching and other board-related activities.
Louis was also an entertainer. He played guitar with his brother Victor and grandson Benjamin, banjo with his son David, and yodeled with his brother George. For years after his retirement, Louis entertained hundreds of seniors in care homes throughout southeast Saskatchewan with his band.
To round out an active, blessed life with his Lord and Saviour Jesus as his guide and source of strength, Louis and Carol enjoyed dancing, sports (curling), gardening, spending time at the lake and maintaining their beautiful farm one kilometre south of Whitewood.
In 2018, Louis and Carol moved to their condominium in Whitewood where they enjoyed living down the hall from their friends. Louis rarely missed an opportunity to go downstairs to the common room to have coffee. Both Louis and Carol enjoyed the various activities in the condo, such as potlucks and parties.
Louis and Carol had their special time together watching baseball games in the summer from their balcony. They also continued to curl and enjoyed watching curling, the Roughriders and the Blue Jays on television.
Louis was diagnosed with heart disease and other health issues that eventually took his life and sent him on to glory, joining family and friends in the hereafter in paradise with Jesus. The family wants to wish a profound thank you to the staff of the Broadview Centennial Lodge and Whitewood Community Health Centre for your love and care during his stays.
A celebration of life was held Saturday, Nov. 23, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at the Whitewood Evangelical Missionary Church, 915 Gambetta Street in Whitewood, SK. Interment took place immediately after the service at the Whitewood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to donate to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan, charity of your choice or the Whitewood Evangelical Missionary Church.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Matthews Funeral Home, Whitewood and Melville.
