On Monday, Feb. 7, 2022, Doreen Harman (nee Nicholson), loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully at the age of 93.
Doreen was predeceased by her husband, Douglas Harman, in 1999.
She is survived by her three children: Garnet (Nancy) Harman, Frederick (Mary) Harman, and Jan (Bill) Huber; grandchildren: Dallas (Jody) Harman and their children, Kendyl, and Kelcey; Richelle Harman and her children, Jasper, Gibson, Darian and Colby; Robert (Katie) Harman and child, Xavier; Dawna (Taylor) Orban and their children, Hayes and Ky; Dayna (Colton) Meyers and their children, Jace and Nora; Kent (Tara) Huber and their children, Miles, Cole and Kendyl; Ryan (Trish) Huber and their children, Tristan and Daycee; Arron (Barb) Huber and their children, Hanna and Mitchel; sister-in-law, Evelyn Nicholson; and many nieces and nephews.
Doreen was born on Oct. 5, 1928 on the family farm south of Edgeley, SK. She was the youngest of five children. Doreen attended elementary school in Edgeley, SK. and high school in Qu’Appelle, SK. Following graduation from high school, Doreen worked for Saskatchewan Government Telephones in Regina, SK and later moved to Fort Qu’Appelle, SK. where she worked several years at the Hanson’s Hardware store.
In 1950, she married Doug. She had a very active life in the community. She was a lady of strong faith with traditional values, as well as, being community-minded, generous and optimistic. She was involved with ACW Auxiliary, Camp Knowles, Cadettes, Sask Women’s Institute, the Fort Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Sask Farm Vacations, 4-H Riding Club, Fort Figure Skating and Curling Clubs. She also instructed tap dancing and gymnastics. During this time, she also helped Doug run the ESSO dealership.
In 1966, Doug and Doreen were instrumental in the start-up of the Fort Winter Festival with their keen interest in the dog races. They hosted 4-H Riding Club events at their acreage, held rodeo’s in their outdoor arena and every Sunday supported the Fort Qu’Appelle Trap Shooting Club. They were more than honored their property was host site for Prince Edward’s trail ride that commenced and ended at their place. Grand central station at the Harman’s!
Both, Doug and Doreen, received Citizen of the Year awards in recognition for their contribution and volunteerism over the years for the community and at the festivals. Later in years, Doreen enjoyed being a driver training instructor and owning and operating Harman’s Rainbow Trout Farm.
Once retired, Doreen moved into town where she had a tremendous circle of friends that she cherished. They played bingo, scrabble and line-danced often. If she had any free time, it was spent at the Fort Museum or Tourist Information Booth.
Three things Doreen valued in her lifetime were her time spent with family and friends, a clean driver’s record and a clean bill of health, which she was always so proud of.
Doreen lived in the Harrison Manor; an independent living residence for seven years.
A private funeral service was held in St. John’s Anglican Church in Fort Qu’Appelle, SK with the Rev. Ed Dunfield officiating.
