Date of Death: July 19, 2021

Peter Matechuk of Sardis, B.C., formerly of Melville, was welcomed into the loving arms of the Lord on Monday, July 19, 2021 at the age of 93. Peter was the second oldest of eight children born to Mike and Anne Matechuk (nee Andrusiak) on the family farm in the Hampton District in Saskatchewan. The family would later move to a farm outside Veregin, Sask. where Peter would grow up and live. Peter hired on the CN in 1949 and he would continue to work for the CN until retiring as a CN Engineer in 1987.
Peter married Roseline Stadynk on June 6, 1957 and the newlyweds would soon move to Melville, Sask. where they would work and raise their family until moving to Sardis, B.C. in 1994, to be closer to their children and grandchildren.
Peter was a strong, honest and principled man. He had steadfast core beliefs about what was right and what was fair. These beliefs were rooted in his faith and his belief in the better nature of all people. Fiercely loyal and protective of the people he loved, Peter’s core beliefs remained unchanged throughout his life and were never compromised for convenience or self-gain.
Peter was meticulous when it came to the things he valued. Whether it was his home, his yard, his cars or the way he shovelled his driveway, you knew whatever needed being done, would be done with pride and determination, and most certainly with a few leftover bolts and screws for the next project.
Peter loved to socialize. He had a great sense of humour and he loved to sing, play his violin and most of all, dance. Peter was a terrific dancer. Often the first one on the dance floor and the last to leave. Legend has it he never missed a dance at any social or wedding.
Peter was a kind, giving and loving husband, father and Gido. He took great pride in his children and grandchildren. His family always came first and he was fiercely protective of them. Although not shy to be stern when called for, he loved his children and grandchildren unconditionally.
Most of all, he loved his wife Rose. She was his purpose and his passion, for 64 years. Even until his last days and his last hug and kiss, his love for Rose was unwavering and the truest of love in every sense of the word.
Peter is survived by his wife of 64 years, Rose; his two children, daughter Marie (Goulden) and son Dennis; his daughter-in-law Nancy (nee Baturin); and his three grandchildren, Mason Goulden and Landen and Shaelah
Matechuk. He is also survived by his brothers, George and Steve and by his sisters, Sylvia Boychuk, Dora Lacktin and Mary Silver.
Peter was predeceased by his father Mike and his mother Anne; and by his brother John and sister Olga
Achtemichuk.
Services were held Saturday, July 24, 2021 at the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Chilliwack, B.C.
