HACK – It is with heavy heart that we announce the peaceful passing of our uncle, Harold Hack, on Sunday, Dec. 20, 2015 with his best friend, Hilda Novak, by his side.
Harold was born on April 23, 1929 to Fred and Katherine (nee Gehring) on the family farm in the Goodeve district. He was the middle child of a family of five children. Harold was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He grew up on the family farm and attended Halech School.
Harold married Katherine (Kay) Issel in 1954, and they farmed the Hack homestead for the next 24 years. They retired to their new home in Melville in 1978, and Harold took up carpentry for the next 20 years. In the fall of 2006, they sold their home and moved into Heritage House in Melville. Kay passed away Dec. 24, 2007. Harold continued to live in Heritage House, and here he met his friend, Hilda. This past year Harold had been in and out of the hospital many times. In November he moved into St. Paul Lutheran Home. After a valiant fight with leukemia, he succumbed to his illness.
Harold enjoyed watching baseball and curling on television, gardening, fishing, playing cards and the family get-togethers for birthdays and anniversaries.
Harold was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Katherine Hack; his wife, Katherine (Kay); his brothers, Elmer and Helmuth; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Alvin Hepperle, Joe and Margaret Golly, Steve and Christine Golly, Burton and Lizzy McCall, Frank Issel and Phillip Issel.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his dearest friend, Hilda Novak; sister, Mary Hepperle; brother, John Hack; sisters-in-law, Arlene Hack, Viola Hack and Lillian Issel; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Harold’s funeral service was held Monday, Dec. 28, 2015 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Melville with the Rev. Doug Schmirler officiating. The organist, Nora Cochrane, led in the singing of the hymns, “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”, “Amazing Grace” and “Here I Am Lord.” Scriptures were read by Sheila Walls and Hailey Graff.
