Gwen McEwen of Whitewood passed away peacefully in the Whitewood nursing home on May 25, 2015 at the age of 87 years.
Gwen was born August 12, 1927 in Wapella, SK to Dufton and Mae Stewart and took all her schooling in Moosomin. Gwen was married to Al McEwen in 1945. They moved to Whitewood and remained here the rest of their lives. Gwen was very active in the church, Royal Purple, Legion, the hospital and nursing home auxiliaries and was the chairperson for the Whitewood history book committee. Gwen loved people and was a great hostess; everyone was more than welcome in her home, the more the merrier. Her family and friends were very precious to her, and she loved them all. Gwen was predeceased by her parents, her loving husband Al, brothers-in-law Ken, Donald, Elwood and Doug McEwen and Scott McLaren and sisters-in-law Marion, Jean and Beth. She leaves to cherish her memory: her daughter Heather, son Gord, daughter-in-law Gerri, two granddaughters Kelsey (Scott) and Kaitlin, and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and many, many dear friends. The funeral service was held Saturday, May 30, 2015 at Knox Presbyterian Church, Whitewood, with her daughter Heather officiating. The pianist, Kim Brule, and the choir led in the hymns “The Church’s One Foundation”, “O God Our Help in Ages Past” and “I, The Lord of Sea and Sky”. The scripture readers were Barb Vennard, Pat Ward and Carole Armstrong. Honorary pallbearers were all those who touched Gwen’s life, and the urn bearers were granddaughters Kelsey and Kaitlin. The recessional hymn, “Amazing Grace” was played by piper Fern Katzberg. Interment was in the
Whitewood Cemetery, ending with the piping of Gwen’s favourite Scottish tune, “The Road to the Isles”. Arrangements were entrusted to Matthews Funeral Home, Whitewood.
