David Albert Maier, beloved husband of Anita; caring father of Tony (Connie), Kim (Nicole), Wanda (Tim) Russell, and Tanya (Dave) Storoschuk; cherished grandfather of Alyssa, Cameron (Khali), Kaitlyn (Dylan) Fredlund, Ryland Maier; Lauren (Brodie) and Nolan (Tamara) Maier; Austin and Shaylyn (Cole) Russell; and Dylan and Danika Storoschuk; and special great-grandfather of Brynlee Fredlund, passed peacefully at the Southeast Integrated Care Centre, Moosomin, SK, on Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2026, with his family at his side.
David was born on Aug. 28, 1945, to Albert and Nancy (Lichacz) Maier. He was the fifth child in a family of thirteen and grew up on the family farm near Broadview. After attending Whitewood School, David farmed with his dad as well as being a hired hand for several local farmers. On Aug. 2, 1969, David married Anita (Brule), his wife of 57 years, and moved to Thompson, MB, where David worked at the nickel mine. Two years later, they moved back to Whitewood and lived in a trailer, working on Howard Balan’s farm. From there they moved to Whitewood, living in several houses, and eventually in 1979, David built his own house on Green Street. David and Anita leased “Dave’s Triple “C” Service garage and restaurant for four years. From there, David worked with Raiwet Construction and then Sandblasting with Ubacol Construction. His last job was caretaker at the Whitewood School, a job in which he took great pride. He retired from the school and spent his time afterward helping with farming, putting his caretaking skills to work at home, as well as dabbling in some baking, especially famous for his Oreo cookies.
David and Anita’s marriage blessed them with four children, Tony, Kim, Wanda, and Tanya, whom he enjoyed coaching and following their activities. He was proud of the home he built for his family. The kids’ friends were always welcome, and often the Maier home was the gathering place. Supper was family time, and they all gathered at the table at 5:30 sharp whenever possible.
David’s family tree expanded as Connie, Nicole, Tim and Dave were added to the family as each of their children married. His ten grandchildren were a welcome blessing, beginning with Lauren, Alyssa, Cameron, and Kaitlyn, Nolan, Ryland, Austin, Shaylyn, Dylan, and Danika. He and Anita were very involved with their family, visiting with the grandkids and attending as many activities as they could. David valued the family he built, and they meant everything to him.
David was a member of the Knights of Columbus and an active member of the Whitewood St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. As a Knight, he volunteered with minor ball and organized the uniforms for many years. He worked the penalty box faithfully for the Whitewood Orioles with Boyd Metzler. He was a member of the Pipestone Valley Jets executive and was very proud when both his sons, Tony and Kim, were players of the inaugural team. He enjoyed playing cards with family and friends, and since he always had a pen in his shirt pocket, he usually was the score-keeper, especially for Canasta. Later, he was a member of the Harmony Club, playing cards and visiting with friends, and often doing some handyman jobs for the club and putting up Christmas decorations in the park. David was a hard worker and a jack-of-all-trades and shared his many skills with family and friends, especially doing building and renovations for his children’s homes.
David was a loyal friend and good neighbour.
As stairs became challenging for David, they sold their home in October 2022 and moved to the Crossroads Villa. As David’s health continued to decline, the following June he required nursing home care and resided at the Whitewood nursing home for his last three years. He appreciated the staff’s care and joking back and forth. He enjoyed participating in activities and dress-up days. Anita transported David back to the villa whenever possible for family gatherings or going on outings.
On Monday, Oct. 12, while in Moosomin for a routine check-up, David unexpectedly aspirated, and he was unable to recover, passing peacefully the next evening.
Our family would like to thank the staff at the Southeast Integrated Care Centre in Moosomin for their care and compassion during David’s final hours. We are thankful to the Whitewood Community Health Centre for their excellent care and the enjoyable interactions he had with the staff and other residents. We are sincerely grateful for the condolences, love, and support we have received from family and friends.
David is survived by his loving wife, Anita (Brule); his children, Tony (Connie), Kim (Nicole), Wanda (Tim) Russell, and Tanya (Dave) Storoschuk; his grandchildren, Lauren (Brodie), Cameron (Khali), Kaitlyn (Dylan) Fredlund, Nolan (Tamara), Ryland, Austin Russell, Shaylyn (Cole) Russell, Dylan and Danika Storoschuk; great-granddaughter Brynlee Fredlund; as well as many brothers, sisters, nephews, nieces, and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents; siblings Gerald, Barbara Ann, Joe, Lloyd, and Theresa; granddaughter Alyssa; and several other important members of his extended family.
A private burial at the Whitewood Cemetery will be held on Monday, Oct. 26, 2026, followed by a public Celebration
of Life at the Whitewood Legion Community Hall at 11:00 a.m. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the Whitewood Community Health Centre’s activity department in memory of David.
