We are saddened to announce the passing of Jean Elinor Virag on Thursday, Sept. 17, 2026.
Jean was a contradiction in the very best way. She will be remembered for her quick wit, stubbornness, and exemplary grasp of profanity, but equally for her kindness, integrity, humility, and resilience.
She valued the solitude the farm offered, yet thrived in the company of family and neighbors. She loved dogs, not cats. She made cookies that were all exactly the same size, although her garden rows weren’t always quite as straight. She loved peaches, but not nectarines.
Jean relished facts and hated obituaries.
At the end of her life, Jean showed tremendous strength. She made the rules and we all followed them, except for this obituary.
Jean was predeceased by her parents, Phyllis and Ed Kienas; son Michael Virag; mother-in-law Barbara Virag;
father-in-law Louis Virag; sister-in-law Brenda Kienas; brother-in-law George Thomson and lifelong friend, Louise Dyke.
Jean is survived by her loving family: her husband of 60 years, Frank Virag; daughter Ronda Virag; son-in-law Craig Getz; grandson Jordan Getz (Denielle); brother Robert Kienas; sisters-in-law Margaret Galbraith, June Crofford, and Rose Virag; brother-in-law Loyd Virag; and her nieces and nephews and their families.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at the Broadview Union Hospital for their care and support.
A private family graveside service will be held for Jean at a later date.
