Date of Birth: February 5, 1930
Date of Death: December 12, 2025
It is with great sadness that the family of Emily Steffan announces her passing on Friday, Dec. 12, 2025.
Emily was the first of seven children born to Mathias (Matt) and Philippina Ulmer on the family farm near Goodeve, SK. She attended Lake Mona School a few miles away. After her schooling was complete, she remained at home on the farm, helping with chores and to raise her siblings.
Emily met the love of her life while on the farm, a fuel delivery man named Fred Steffan. After a period of courtship, Emily and Fred were married in November 1954. This marriage was blessed with two children, Charleen and Rodney.
Emily had many health issues along her life’s journey, but she fought hard to get through them and always managed to come out stronger than before. She managed to stay in her home until 2024 when she knew the basics were becoming too much for her to handle. She moved to Home Comfort care home and was there until June 2025, when she was able to move into St. Paul Lutheran Home where she resided at the time of her passing.
Emily was predeceased by her parents, Mathias (Matt 1983) and Philippina (1965) Ulmer; her sisters in infancy, Caroline (1934) and Phyllis (1935); her husband, Fred (2010); daughter-in-law Audrey (2022); brothers-in-law Gerald Schill and Art Volke; and sister-in-law Florence Ulmer. She is survived by her daughter, Charleen (Kim) Tubman, and son Rodney; grandchildren and great-grandchildren Landon (Abby) Tubman, Wagner and Maci;
Braden (Sharlese) Tubman, Aurora and Kylie; Chandra (Tyler) Heise, Rowynn. She also leaves to mourn her passing her brothers Matt (Shirley) Ulmer and John Ulmer; sisters Lillian Volke and Florence Schill; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Special thank you to the staff at St. Paul Lutheran Home for their care and compassion in caring for our mom while she was there. In mom’s own handwritten words –
“Many thanks to my children for caring for me all these long and lonely years. Thanks to my wonderful neighbours for their phone calls and many things they have done for me. Thanks to the good Lord that answered my prayers to keep me going on with my life and keeping me in his care.”
In accordance with her wishes, there will be no funeral service. A private family interment will take place at a later date.
Arrangements are entrusted to Matthews Funeral Home, Melville.
A long life well lived!
