Edward William Henry “Bill” Bird of Avonhurst, Sask. died on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2025 at the age of 86 years.
Bill was predeceased by his parents, Ted and Nellie Bird; sisters, Dorthey, Mary and Phillis. He is survived by his sister Ceilia Bird of Regina; brother-in-law Reno Sartor of NWT; nephew Miles and niece Diana of Kamloops, B.C.
Bill was born on the farm, NW-2-19-16 on April 26, 1938. He was the youngest child and only son of Nelly and Albert (Ted) Bird, who were both born in England.
Bill’s passion was his farm and helping others. He had pride in his yard and garden. Bill could fix anything, farm or otherwise. He did mechanical work, carpentry work,
rebuilding motors in his shop, many major house renovations and repairs.
Bill maintained a large garden. The garden diminished in size when his sisters could no longer come out and work in it alongside of him. Bill was always quick to share his bountiful produce with others and many ladies were the recipient of bouquets of gladiolas from Bill’s garden.
Bill liked horse pulls with Jack and Kevin Grad and also haying with Jack. He enjoyed driving combine for Brian Langston.
Bill worked for a time in Regina as a gas station attendant; the gas station is no longer around. He worked in Omega, SK as a farm labourer for a time and he worked in Regina at Plains Equipment. He also worked with Pete Aksomitis on the cattle farm. Bill worked for the village of McLean and also for Russ and Murray Grad in their shop. He also drove school bus, Edgeley to Fort Qu’Appelle.
A public visitation will be held in Tubman Funeral Home, Indian Head, Sask. on Friday, Jan. 17, 2025 from 5:00 – 7:30 p.m. A private family graveside service will take place in St. Thomas Anglican Parish Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memoriam may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
