Wilbert Schick, formerly of Melville, SK, passed away peacefully on Friday, Aug. 4, 2023, at Southeast Integrated Care Centre in Moosomin, SK, with family by his side. He was 80 years old.
Wilbert was born on Feb.1, 1943, seventh child to Mary (Lang) and John Schick, on the family farm at Killaly, SK. He attended school at the Good Hope and Stella schools where he finished through Grade 8. Afterwards, Wilbert worked in various jobs, including farming, logging and carpentry, but long-haul trucking was the profession he enjoyed most. In his leisure time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and travelling throughout Canada and the United States.
Wilbert met Ruth (Osborne) in Phoenix, AZ, in 1978 during a winter holiday. They were married Nov. 27, 1982, and lived together on the family acreage in Melville, SK, for many years. They were blessed with three children. In 1997, the family moved to Arkansas, where Wilbert began working for J.B. Hunt Trucking Company. While with J.B. Hunt, he received many awards for his superb driving skills, including many safety and performance awards and the “million mile” award. He was very proud that he finished his career accident free.
After retirement in 2005, Wilbert and Ruth returned to Melville where they enjoyed gardening, fishing, woodworking, attending hockey games, bird watching and spending time with family and friends. They enjoyed travelling together, heading south each winter and visiting the extended family along the way. Over the years, Wilbert visited 49 out of the 50 states and especially enjoyed their trip to Hawaii in 2004, from where he came home with the biggest fishing story of his life.
Wilbert and Ruth welcomed their first grandchild in 2014 and were blessed with a total of five grandchildren over the years. Wilbert was very involved with his grandchildren and enjoyed spending time building happy memories with them, whether it be building birdhouses, working in the garden patch or one of the many park visits and sharing of ice creams on hot days. Wilbert was also a member of the Melville Baptist Church where he humbly and faithfully served in various capacities throughout the years.
Wilbert was predeceased by his parents, John and Mary; and siblings Elsie, Wayne, Doreen, Raymond and Arnold. He leaves to mourn his loss and cherish his memory: his wife, Ruth; children Nathan (Jeriann) of Phoenix, AZ, Dustin (Kayla) of Moosomin, SK, and Deanna (Colin) of Saskatoon, SK; grandchildren Jaxx, Vance, Ronan, Taylor and Hunter; siblings Delmer (Jean), Elmer (Sharon), Herb (Janet), Hilda and Vern (Candy); numerous nieces and nephews; and many additional family and friends.
Funeral service was held on Friday, Aug. 11, 2023, at the Melville Baptist Church, Melville, with Pastor Jon Pettinger officiating. Interment took place in Melville City Cemetery. Donations in memory of Wilbert may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan or the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Matthews Funeral Home, Melville.
