Date of Birth: November 5, 1935
Date of Death: May 8, 2026
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Dr. Ed Derworiz of Calgary, AB, with his loved ones by his side on Friday, May 8, 2026, at the age of 90 years.
Ed was born in Kamsack, SK, on Nov. 5, 1935. Being artistic and talented with his hands, he pursued a dentistry degree from the University of Alberta in 1959. He practiced dentistry for 47 years, beginning in Yorkton and later relocating to Regina, SK. “Dr. D” was regarded as an outstanding dentist, keeping patients at ease with his wit and good humour. He loved to make people smile and laugh, whether it was his patients, his family, or strangers at the grocery store.
Ed’s accomplishments extended well beyond his work. He played the fiddle in a university polka band, was a single-figure handicap golfer, an accomplished curler, and an avid gardener. Until he retired and moved to Alberta in 2006 to be nearer his daughter, most summers were spent tending to his garden acreage in Lumsden, SK. During his time in High River, AB, from 2006 and then in Canmore, AB, from 2013, he enjoyed an active lifestyle and could usually be found on long walks with his beloved dog, Fuji.
Above all, he was a proud, loving, and fun dad, travelling extensively with his daughter in his later years to Italy, France, Hungary, Greece, Switzerland, the Maldives, Australia, Singapore, South Africa, and Papua New Guinea.
Ed is survived by his daughter, Deidre Derworiz (Robert Jessop) of Canmore, AB, stepson, Darwin Schulz, of Calgary, AB, stepdaughter, Lisa Schulz, of Edmonton, AB, and many dear cousins, nieces, nephews, step-grandchildren, and wonderful friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, Mike and Mary Derworiz; brother, David Derworiz, sister, Olga Hill, and mother of his daughter and stepchildren, Cecelia Derworiz.
A special thank you to all the caring staff and dementia-care team at Bethany Riverview in Calgary where Ed spent his last few years, the Peter Lougheed Centre for his care during his last few days, and Absolute Kindness for their invaluable companionship.
A private Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.
If desired, donations may be made in Ed’s name to the Alzheimer’s Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories at www.alzheimer.ca/ab/en or a charity of your choice.
