Wilma Polvi of Whitewood, passed away Friday, Feb. 25, 2024, at the age of 96 years.
Wilma Aileen, fourth child of Isaac and Amalia Polvi (nee Maki) was born Jan. 6, 1928, on the family farm with Mrs. Luoma in attendance. She was confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church and took her schooling at Convent Creek.
Wilma worked locally before she went to Winnipeg, MB, in 1948 to work at Eaton’s in the Custom Drapery Department; for almost 30 years, she was a drapery packer, drapery cutter, made drapes and checked the finished work. The last couple of years, she was the forelady until Eaton’s closed the department in 1980. She was also a Brownie leader and Sunday school teacher in Winnipeg. Wilma then moved back home to help her mother out on the farm; also during that time, she did drapery work. In 1988 she made around 15 New Finland dresses. After her mother’s passing, she continued on at the farm cooking and helping John and Arnold out wherever she could. In 1989 Wilma moved to Whitewood senior apartments on Green Street where she lived until her passing.
Wilma became a member of the Harmony Club, Whitewood Nursing Home Auxiliary and a member of the St. John’s LCW. She was also the treasurer for the LCW, nursing home auxiliary and the Green Street Seniors.
Her hobbies were sewing, knitting, crocheting, playing cards, crossword and jigsaw puzzles and golfing. She loved helping others whenever she could. Wilma was also a cancer survivor of 36 years.
Wilma was predeceased by her father, Isaac; mother Amalia; brothers Wilfred, Leonard, John and Arnold; her dear Aunt Liana; brothers-in-law Charles Thomas and Arthur Johnson; and sisters-in-law Isabelle Polvi and Dorothy Polvi. She is survived and will be dearly missed by her sisters, Viola Johnson and Alice Thomas; sister-in-law Eilina Eskelinen; and nieces, nephews and all their families, the rest of the relatives and all her friends.
Wilma’s funeral service was held Friday, March 8, 2024, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, New Finland, with interment taking place in the New Finland Cemetery.
Arrangements were entrusted to Matthews Funeral Home, Whitewood and Melville.
